So I started thinking abot getting a sports bike b/c I might be driving an hour to school and an hour back next winter semester and I dont want to put those kind of miles on the GT. First I kow it would probably be in my best interest to start off with something not to powerful so what would you guys suggest? Also Im only looking to spend around 2-3K so obviously nothing fancy. And my last question is how much should I look at for insurance since ill be 20. Any feedback is appreciated and wanted. Learn me.
my friends first bike was a 600, he sold it in two weeks to get something better. start big, theres no reason to learn how to ride a slower bike if your just gonna upgrade. and you will upgrade.

At your age, powerful sport bike insurance is gonna be extremely high. Most will tell you that they would not recomend a sport bike with more than two cylinders for a beginner. 4 cylinder bike = death.
My first bike was an 04 Honda Silverwing Scooter. It had a twin 600cc, 49hp motor, I could carry an 18 pack under the seat and it did well over 100mph. I rode that for 15,000 miles over two years. I now have an 06 Yamadog FJR1300.

Well I really dont think ill want to keep upgrading. Im not really into racing bikes just want a DD for school. Ill of course take a class since I dont have any experience. Plus the more money I spend on a bike the less for the car. I was looking at something like a 250 Ninja like you said speedstang. Ill look into those more.
Honestly the thought of going down the highway at 70mph in open air is kind of scary. Ive rode on the back of a Harley on the highway and I was a little nervous. And honestly ive never taken my CAR over 130 and I only went that fast once. I would like to think that im not some kid who does ****. If I wanted to commit suicide I would just put my 9mm in my mouth and pull the trigger.

I'd say go with a ninja 250R. I'm currently looking at a new 08. I'm not a noob to "bikes" as I had a dirt bike for years, but I am new to street bikes. The 250R is really cheap (3500 for a new 08), good gas mileage(up to 70mpg), and looks like a bigger cc bike (well at least the new 08 does, the other ones are ugly ).

I dont agree at all.
1st there is NO possible way to use a 600 sport bike to it's full potential on the streets. If you're a pro you MIGHT be able to do it on the track.
A 600 is more than enough bike for anybody. If you get a liter bike you're just throughing money down the drain. I'll run circles around them all day on my 600.
I'd say the 250 ninja would be perfect for you to start out on.
Buy a bike a couple years old. They're gonna be cheaper & will let you find out if you REALLY are into biking. And, if it does tip over in a parking lot or whatever, you're not gonna cry as much as if you scratch up a shiny new bike.
If you find you REALLY like it then sell the used bike for almost the same you paid for it & buy another "bigger" one then. You'll know a LOT better then exactly what you want

I'd say get a used Ninja 250. They're cheap, reliable, and you won't kill yourself. (maybe) You'll also learn to ride better than if you'd started on a big bike.
Take the MSF, wear all your gear all the time, and act like every person on the road is out to kill you.

Edit: AND DON'T get an SS. You'll kill yourself.
And- Get full gear. Helmet, jacket, pants, gloves, boots, all designed for riding. The first time you fall you'll be glad you did.

ive been riding for 3yrs, in thouse 3yrs ive put over 17k miles on sport bikes.
my first bike was a kawasaki ex500, got 55mpg, and on that bike (when i got good at riding) ive beat svt cobras, the audi TT, countless ricers, mustangs, you name it, and the bike has 50hp and 30ft lbs of trq!
i now have a 2007 SV1000S.....last night, 20min after 1am, i got a knock on my door that someone stole my bike, draged it down the street, and dumped it.
got the bike back, damages arnt bad at all.........but it wakes you up
the bike isent really rideable, i have about 1inch of my cluch lever, and about 2inch's of my shift lever (yea, that was fun shifting).
i had a cover on the bike, and a lock on the brake rotor.....($120 lock)
if it wasent for someone hearing them, and yelling at them, i wouldent have my bike right now.......
n-e-way, enough of my sobb story...
the 2008 kawasaki ninja 250 is an amazing bike, i LOVE the power of a 1000, but you cant beat the good looks, cheap price, and 70+mpg....
the ninja has prob around 30hp, and 18ftlbs..... but the bike is prob 100-150lbs lighter then my bike.
you wont be whoopin up on ppl, but you wont be getting passed (well, on the highway over 80mph a ptcruiser will dust you)
go for it.
my real advice, most realistic, and best bet, is to wait untill the 08' ninjas start selling, then buy a older 250, you can find 250's for $1500!!!!
there god ugly, but it will save you some cash
(listen for engine knocking, bald tires, suspention that bottoms out under pressure, crappy brakes, klunky shifting, and make sure gadges and lights work)
