At most of the auto parts stores in my town they have people that actually know what they're talking about. Sure they still hire some morons, but most of the time I can actually go in and find what I'm looking for without much trouble. Although last week some kid at Autozone asked me if I wanted to race his old RX7.

yeah, Autozone is full of retards.

I once walked in to buy a IAC valve for a windstar, and there was only 1 ****ING GUY taking care of the customers! The other 3 douchebags were:

1 in "lunch break" (he was outside fiddling with his car)
1 checking and alternator for a customer
1 cleaning up with a mop

WTF!!!!! I did 25 minutes in line because some douchebag decided to buy a muffler for his 1988 s10 POS truck and he had the Autozone guy chech the whole store for the goddamn muffler and he, indeed, found it. But at the end, he only wanted to know the price. WWWWWWTTTTTTTFFFFFFF!!!11!!!

sooo, at the end, finally, my turn:

Autozone guy:Good morning, how ma...
Me: I am looking for an IAC valve for a Windstar 1998 3.8 bla bla bla
A.G: Ok lemme check
Me: (thinking, you better have it ****) Make it quick, my wife is in labor and I left food in the oven (bs)
A.G: It's 85.95 and we do have it
Me: (I put a 100 bill in the counter) Bring it.
A.G: (He went to look for it, comes back 5 minutes later) I am sorry, but we are out of stock, would you like to ord...
Me: (Grabbed my bill and turned away) I just wasted 30 minutes of my life in this POS store! I should've gone to Advance!!!

Everyone looked at me with eyes of "WTF", but yeah, Autozone sucks.

/rant

sounds like the guy was really nice and helpful, i don't know why you acted that way.

when you have to work at 9am and went to autozone at 8.45 for a simple IAC valve, you will react the same way I did.

Get there earlier.  It isn't his fault that you:
- Were coming in 15 minutes before work
- There was a line
- People do get lunch breaks in America...
- The guy mopping should of helped, but he didn't, don't get mad at the guy actually helping you...
- Another guy was helping a seperate customer.  Are you bitching that they weren't giving you special treatment?
- There are inventory SNAFU's sometimes.  Most all products are scanned in individually, some get scanned twice.
- Don't be a dick, if you think you are getting treated so unfairly, buy your **** online or start your own store...
- Take a freaking chill pill unless you want a stroke by the time you hit 25...

you go to a car parts store...you kind of expect some knowledge about car parts instead of just going there and buying **** with no guidance.

anything outside of knowing whether the part numbers match is ridiculous.

Autozone is not a service store.  You pay less for parts at places like this, but you have to give up service.  They couldn't afford to keep knowledgable employees.  Same thing goes for Walmart... you go there for the savings, not because the teenager in electronics is a tv guru.

I have done time at a corporate-based auto parts store.  It comes down to this:  pay peanuts and get monkeys.  Plus, they focus more on customer service than knowledge and rarely reward any type of knowledge, skill, experience or certification.  They want to spend as little money as possible, to help their bottom line.  Which is why you get better service at dealerships and places like Carquest.

Um, I see the person above me wrote the same thing.  Oh well.

yea my car broke down on the side of the interstate and the next morning we put a battery in it just to get it off the interstate when we pretty much new it was the Alt. goin bad and we get there and they test the alt and say its fine...WRONG. omg i nearly had a heart attack watching them touch my car, the first girl did not know what she was doing, my gf made me walk away before i slapped her. Then the manager came out and tried, and they said the alt was fine...WRONG. but it needed that battery cause the other was shot and i ended up takin it into the shop to get it replaced. But there is an advance near me where the people in there are very good, so it all depends on the store, but autozone is definitely not high on my list. If i go there, it's for something i can find myself.

heh, I went to a local autozone to pick up some little stuff. Light bulbs and crap. Guy says "what kinda car you got" I said "2005 mustang 4.0 liter". He types some stuff and then says, "uh, you mean a 3.8 liter right?". I said NO, I mean a 4.0 Liter. He looks at me with a puzzled look and says, "they don't put 4.0's in mustangs" I said fine, just give the the bulbs that fit my 2005 3.8 then. LOL.

Dayum,

You guys must have some $hitty Autozones around you. I work part time for the one on broad street about 3 miles from my house.

If any of the crap you guys described happened at this store, Someone would be fired....FAST.

All of the guys that work at our store are gearheads or tuners and we have one ASE mechanic working part time as well.

At least our manager makes sure we know how to use the testing equipment before we can touch anyones car.

We only have one chick that works here and she's about useless as far as parts knowledge goes, however in her defense she will run out and do a code scan/battery & alt. check or wiper blade replacement in a heartbeat.

I feel for you guys, let one of us get caught not helping a customer by not coming from behind the counter to look for something for you? GONE!!

The same thing goes for the guy mopping the floor, he could've stopped long enough to help behind the parts counter, let that crap happen at the broad street store and you'll see one less employee the next time you come in.

Sorry to hear that you guys have had such bad service at Autozone.

I used to work at a 'zone when I was going to school. I was the only guy there that knew how to test a relay.
I got bitched at by corporate because I told people that a lean code didn't necessarily mean that they needed to buy an 02 sensor.
My manager sucked every dick in the building (except mine, but in retrospect my girlfriend at the time never ended up being worth turning it down) INCLUDING some fleet customers. She was a totally ignorant tramp

The BEST thing to do if you are bored and need a good laugh is go in there and have them pull some brake rotors off the shelf. Then ask them why they don't have a warranty eventhough they store them vertically when the plain, bright white box is marked with only four words :

DO NOT STACK VERTICALLY

"um....but......uh......hmmm.....well....... let me get the manager"     ????

These stories are funny, but honestly the autozone near me is pretty good.  The owner/GM of the one near me has a nice fox an we'v bs'ed about them many times before.  I guess I got lucky...

Good god,

it's a wonder they stay in business. I'm glad i work at the store that i do, good people that know wtf is going on.

If i witnessed half the stuff you guys describe going on at my store, i'd quit..more from embarrassment than anything else.

I stick around for 20% discount, and the occassional 30% off days.
