Fred Malibu -> RE: BEST CAI NOT REQUIRING TUNE (4/20/2008 6:35:42 AM)

the title says "BEST".. why is that the best?

K&N is certainly well known in the CAI industry, but by no means would I consider it the best.

If you do not want to have to tune the car, then you will probably see the same gain no matter what brand you choose.. Granatelli makes one too.

Don't waste money on something you would consider re-doing later.

That being said, good luck.

no i was asking what is the best, and stating that i was looking at that one but need people to tell me if it's a good way to go or if there are better ones out there.

63 Series Intake Kits are not legal for street use in some U.S. states.

You did see that So it must be street legal in your State. I went with this one from K&N

http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=69-3522TP

The only thing I did not like about it was that you have to cut the end of the crank case breather hose off to install it to the K&N Intake tube. But I saved all the parts so I can reuse them if needed. I like mine and went with it because I'm a Chicken and keep reading posts about tunes gone bad on people and I can see that happening to me that’s just my kind of luck. So till I get all the things I will do to it done first I'll hold off for now.

i'm in canada and it's sold at the canadian tire i work at so it must be legal. i can get a 10% discount off of it as well.

approximately how much do these go for anyways?

tfyzorg2 -> RE: BEST CAI NOT REQUIRING TUNE (4/20/2008 7:23:20 AM)

Why do you want a cai without a tune? your not gonna get any performance gains...

unless you just want it for looks

pat6674u -> RE: BEST CAI NOT REQUIRING TUNE (4/20/2008 7:28:17 AM)

Any CAI without a tune simply leans out the a/f ratio which will increase hp a little. The K&N was a nice set-up as I had one a few years ago. If you want real performance with your CAI you really should go with a kit that includes a tuner and tune. It will be more expensive but the benefits will be worth it.

antipeterleague -> RE: BEST CAI NOT REQUIRING TUNE (4/20/2008 7:52:40 AM)

this is pretty much a temporary thing. i know it'll cost more in the long run but that doesn't really matter to me.

vtmustangs -> RE: BEST CAI NOT REQUIRING TUNE (4/20/2008 9:36:21 AM)

I have the 63 series the only state it isn't legal in is California.  I like it yea maybe its not the best CAI out there but you can tell a difference.  I will be getting a tuner soon and I personally don't think its worth the extra 250 for another CAI since the difference won't be that huge

Devil Wolf -> RE: BEST CAI NOT REQUIRING TUNE (4/20/2008 11:01:11 AM)

i noticed more of a performance upgrade from a tuner than i did from the cai. if you can only afford one, get the tune now and save up for the intake.

i drove with a tune only for a month before i got my intake and was a little underwhelmed when i swapped it out. i noticed a big change with the tune and thought it would double with the intake; it really didn't.

buy the tune now, be happy with the upgrade you can 100% feel, and add on the intake when you can afford it. just MHO.

kdrshocker -> RE: BEST CAI NOT REQUIRING TUNE (4/20/2008 12:13:21 PM)

S&B is a decent intake that dosn't require a tune.  plus they are a major manufacture of air filters.

svastano -> RE: BEST CAI NOT REQUIRING TUNE (4/20/2008 5:13:35 PM)

I got an AirRaid for mine. Reasonable price and seem to be good quality. Looks almost the same as the Roush... Could be used later if you get a Tune...

Sancho805 -> RE: BEST CAI NOT REQUIRING TUNE (4/20/2008 5:29:47 PM)

best advice if you can't get both tuner and cai would be to get tuner with k&n drop-in filter. if you want a CAI first anyways and plan on a tuner later, i think the aFe had the best numbers without any tuning. Go with aFe IMO.

antipeterleague -> RE: BEST CAI NOT REQUIRING TUNE (4/20/2008 9:54:55 PM)

yeah i was looking at the afe i posted earlier. seems legit.

cam2904 -> RE: BEST CAI NOT REQUIRING TUNE (4/20/2008 10:42:12 PM)

What ever intake you choose good luck on it. You can see the intake in my sig. The best advice I ca give you is to choose one with a tuner. The reason being is if you wanna go Forced Induction later, you already have a tuner. In addition if you want gears, wheels change you already have it.

ToanTo -> RE: BEST CAI NOT REQUIRING TUNE (4/21/2008 5:15:00 AM)

personally i got the MMR intake before i got a tune.  now i hear that mmr is usually overpriced for what it is, but i got a decent deal on it from someone else, lightly used.  without a tune i noticed some slight increase in trottle response and it felt a little better.  then later i got a tuner and it feels a lot better now.  without a tune you'll feel slight changes but the tune is where it's at.  however, if i were to go back to do it all over, i'd go for one of those combo packages with tuner and cai.  they're the most cost-benefit

157db -> RE: BEST CAI NOT REQUIRING TUNE (4/23/2008 8:22:17 AM)

No tune intake?
Thats just wrong.
Get the CAI and the tune or no CAI at all.
IMHO
Been there, done that. [:'(]

it isnt both or nothing. he can get a good CAI now and the tuner later. its not the best way to go cost wise but if he can only afford one at this time, its OK to get the CAI. just dont expect big results. better throttle response and a little better acceleration. still not as much as you would get from a tuner but still better than stock.

Redneck Chinaman -> RE: BEST CAI NOT REQUIRING TUNE (4/23/2008 11:34:50 AM)

I chose the AEM Brute Force for my 4.0....I felt a slightly better performance in my mustang, but I felt like it needed more. Therefore, I ordered a tune from VMP which should be arriving on friday[:D]. I ordered my CAI from a performance shop which concentrates more on imports. They state that they would choose AEM over K&N due to the reason that the oil on the K&N air filters were known for screwing up the a/f sensor. They also state that AEM takes more time on producing their CAI's.
