Setting the valve clearence, from the shop manual Alternate Procedure, (Part 8-1) it says, Rotate the crankshaft until each piston is on TDC at the end of the compression stroke". I marked the crankshaft but do not understand what "after the compression stroke means"?

I'm sure this is a fairly basic process foe most people.

Appreciate the help.

pull a spark plug on the #1 cyl and put your finger over the hole...have someone roll (slow bumps) the engine over (ignition unhooked) until you feel the air push your finger off of the hole. you will know when it is. then make sure the piston is at its highest point for TDC.

Ehhh...there's an easier way to adjust valves than that.

Grab yourself a screwdriver and unplug the coil wire.  Start at cylinder #1.  Use the screwdriver to short the B+ terminal on the starter solenoid to the small terminal next to it until you see both valves completely close.  If you're unsure, keep cranking until you're sure.  Adjust both valves, then move to the next cylinder and repeat.
