All the gas stations around me near Tampa, FL contain 10% ethanol.  Is this now a state/federal requirement?  If not, how can I find out which gas stations do not contain 10% ethanol?

yeah, I noticed places around me now have 10% ethanol.

Producing ethanol is one of the dumbest economic choices ever made.

+1

I filled up at a rutters (similar to Sheetz) and they have 10% ethanol crap... well I noticed a decrease in fuel economy with that tank....  never going there again... plus my car didnt seem to like it too much... considering ethanol wasnt really though of in 1991

what do you think 93 octane will do when you have an 89 tune.

haha nothing but burn less efficent, if you dont need 93 dont waste your money. unless you have high compression or advanced(bumped timing) then you dont need it. plain and simple

meh true, but if ethanol degrades gas then u would need a higher quality to compensate...or am i totally off the mark here?

ethanol = more octane, but it takes more to do it cant remember the exact percentage somewhere around 15-20% i think it was

ethanol is nothing but a subsidy that the govt pays for which equals me and you and it is no better for the enviroment

i think e85 has an octane rating of about 115 e85 is 85%ethanol and 15% gas

yeah it has a lower flash point, paired w/ the higher combustibility makes it less efficient, meh wat ever i dont wat im talking about...

Nope.. you dont. Simplified, octane rating is a rating of how much compression the fuel can take before detonation.. and e85 or even 10% mix can be compressed more than plain o'l 87 octane. The problem is it doesnt have quite the same explosion as gasoline, which causes people to use slightly more fuel to drive exactly the same way. Basically you lose a couple mpg due to compensating and dont even realise it.

And using premium fuel if you are not tuned for it, are not boosted, or do not have a high compression motor is absolutely a waste of money. You might as well take the extra .30 a gallon you are paying and throw it down the drain. Infact depending on circumstances you could be causing your car to have less power. The fuel isnt compressed to the proper point for ignition so it doesnt burn off all the way, and you may not get as much power due to that. So basically if your dumb enough to pay for premium when you dont need it, you are likely paying more for less power.

Ohh.. and to answer the question from the OP:
No, it is by no means required.. however it costs about 10-15% less than plain 87 octane due to subsidy's at the moment. The stations are charging you regular 87 octane price and reaping in the extra difference between the 10% mix vs the regular mix. And stations are not federally required to notify you that they are using a different fuel mix, so many stations have no notifications at all that they are running a 10% mix.
