Any of you folks have a good tip for me regarding a "new" beater?
My 1994 Olds 88 LSS finally bit the dust last week, and I need to
get another beater so I won't have to drive my Stang in the rain, or to the beach,
and of course in the snow next winter .
I'm willing to spend between $3 - 5K for something in excellent condition (and
naturally a one-owner car, preferably owned by a senior).

Any good tips ???

Hey, don't knock it- that's how my parents found my house for me five years ago (got a great deal from the surviving family who just wanted to dump it a.s.a.p.!).

If only I had a 2 car garage I'd buy a Bullitt and keep this Stang as "The World's Most Beautiful Beater", but alas...

1995 Oldsmobile cutlass, I just sold mine for like 4 grand, it was gold with tinted windows. The thing is old people love those cars, so when they kick the bucket, it becomes the kids problem...

I would go and pick up a 5.0. Cheap and easy to fix.
That or a Focus and even in all honosty a cheap little Honda.

Cheap used Honda that has been taken care of.  There's a good reliable winter driver.

definitely go with the honda man. especially with the price of gas. my beater/daily driver is a 98 jeep cherokee that gets less mpg (a lot less haha) than the stang. i wish I had a nice little honda for everyday. gas just hit 3.25 a gallon for regular in NJ where i live which I know isn't too bad compared to other places but it's still bad. at least gas is cheaper here! you pay out the nose for everything else...

I used to own a 91' Honda CRX ... lots of fun to drive, small, and GREAT on gas mileage ...

I'm looking again, and have found some pretty good deals in the 2,000-2,500 market.

After the most recent hail storm, I've decided I need to build a carport outside and get a "beater" for the few cold months.

get a small pickup.
They work great for going to the beach! You can toss all your stuff in the back without a worry!
With my GT I have to make sure I get every bit of sand off me and my boards before even opening the trunk!

I also recommend the early Mazda Protege5 sport wagons as they can be picked up pretty cheap and have a ton of room, 5 seats and good handling.

Hey GT Newbie, I just sold my 95 cougar with 150000 on the ticker. I also sold a few old jetski's and a trailer. After the liquidation I had about 4g's. I found an old timer who was getting rid of his 2002 Cadillac Deville. I took out a 6,000 loan, and picked it up for $10,000 (that's what the dealer offered him for the trade in.). The car is brand spankin new and it only had 36,000 on the clock. I figure I'll have this car for about ten years. The MPG is about 22 around town and 27 on the highway. The car rides nice and has all the buzzers and bells. Yeah, I could have bought a car that gets better gas mileage, but this car is way more comfortable and has 275HP to boot. There are a lot of good deals out there on Cadi's and Gas burners. Good luck with your purchase, whatever you buy.

3800 powered  GM..... 88, LeSabre, Bonneville.
Makes perfect sense as a beater.

That said I tend to buy things with character. Even if they dont make sense.

1968 VW Beetle
1969 912 Porsche (When they were held in contempt by the 956 and 911 faithfull).
1979 Mazda RX7
1983 Renault LeCar with giant Canvas Sunroof (Thats a R5 to our overseas guys).
1986 Dodge Omini GLH Turbo
Dodge Caravan with factory Turbo 5-Speed
Dodge Shadow Turbo

You get the picture...
