I bought my first Deisel, so I have a few questions I'm hoping you all can chime in with and help me out

The truck is a 1994 F-350 Dually w/7.3L Turbo.  I drove it home from Florida and only got about 15mpg's on the highway at about 67 mph while turning 2500 rpms.   I was expecting a little more.  Does 15 sound average?  Are there any tricks/tunes/mods that I could do to help in that department?

In the cab of this truck there is a small rubber tube under the dash, with a dial and vaccuum style connector at the end of.  When I turn the dial to the open position I can hear air hissing out of it (not being sucked in) when the engine is running. This comes through the firewall and appears to connect to a T in a line that runs from the intake runner (after the turbo and airbox).  What the heck is this gizmo for?

Also in the cab of the truck is an aftermarket light, that comes on when the truck is first started and remains lit for a minute or so and then goes off.  I traced the wire and it appears to be connected to the coil on top of the motor.  What is this light for - oil temp or pressure check or something?

Thats about it for now - any help you all can provide will be much appreciated.

i thought ford's 7.3 was a n/a engine. if it was and the previous owner turbo'd it, then it might have bigger fuel pumps and injectors and thats why you are getting reduced mpg....just throwing that out there, no idea really

i dont have any idea about the other things

btw, i expect to see pictures of this thing fully detailed

The light is the coil heater indicator thingie.   I know hubby tells me not to start it til the light goes out.  Just turn the key on but dont start it til the light is out.

Nope - I think you are thinking of the Glow Plug Indicator....my truck has the WAIT TO START light in the dash, which I obey and don't start until this goes out.   The light I am talking about is definitely an add-on (its mounted beneath the dash), and it does not come on until the engine is started and then remains lit for a minute or so.

As for the turbo - 1994 was the first year for factory turbo's and this one is a stock turbo.  From what I hear the turbos actually get better mileage than the n/a's

haha  yeah, you are right.    oops.

I think hubby gets about 16 mpg in his 02 f250.  It had the quadzilla tuner thing, but it seems to make it worse on fuel..................but it does make it go.  He keeps it turned off most of the time.

sounds like a vacuum bleeder just from my boost experience.  it leaks off pressure in the vacuum system so the wastegate thinks there is less boost being made and it gets tricked into boosting the turbo higher.  does it do better on fuel closed off or did you not mess with it much while driving?

im not sure if they started intercooling in 94 (i thought they started in 97 or 98 but might be thinking of cummins not the powerstroke), you might want to get one just to lower intake air temperatures.

93 the turbo was optional, 94 it became standard, and 95 was the first year of the powerstroke.... that milage sounds about right for a dually,

turbo was an option 93-94
powerstroke in 94.5
not sure about intercooler

Dodge put an intercooler on the Cummins in 91

The Powerstrokes don't do that great on mileage. I'd think a 7.3 would be a little higher but the dually may be making up for it.

I need to find me a 12v Cummins tho too bad having to buy a $4000 tranny will make up for all the free mods

Just thought I would post what I learned over at Ford Truck Enthusiast:

*The tube gizmo is for an aftermarket boost gauge

*The light is for the glow plug cycle, so I guess that means I have a WAIT TO START light and then a WAIT TO DRIVE light.

*Ford switched from IDI (In-Direct Injection) to the PowerStroke direct injection mid-year 1994 (or I guess Navistar did)  Based on the VIN check, my truck is a 1994.5 with a Powerstroke which I recon is a good thing.

*Based on the rpm's at 65mph everyone over there is guessing I have the 4.10 rear which is meant for hauling not speeding   So ~16 mpg is about average at 65-70 mph.  I guess if I want to drive 55-60 with the trailer it will do pretty well compared to the Navi
