What car was the "it" car that defined the mainstream performance car for that decade? There will be the Ultra-Cars in every generation, but not everyone could obtain one. I'm talking about the car that a major car manufacturers made easily available to the public and everyone seemed to embrace because of it's potential and aftermarket possibilities.
Your options (answer all or choose a few) are any decade starting as far back as you feel you can answer. I.E. - 1969 represents the pinnacle of the 60's, 1979 represents the pinnacle of the 70's, and so on. Also, please keep in mind try to keep the arguing down. I'd like to have a thread filled 80% with answers. It's not going to be any fun if I have to sift through 2 pages of OMG 4v is SOOOO MUCH BETTER THAN LS1 in 99.
So again please. Less talky, more ratings.
1969 - 1967 Corvette
1979 - Pontiac T/A
1989 - Mustang 5.0 LX
1999 - LS1 F-body
2009 - C6 Corvette

I grew up in the 80 racing on front street in philly. The 5.0 was a dream come true for us street racers (Fast & Cheap) so I'll cast a vote for the fox!

I'll let this go cause you're an SRT-4 owner and you guys are pretty goofy , but lets try to keep mainly lists
1960's- GTO, it's not the fastest but it started the speed hunger. Big engine light body. 1970's- I'm gonna have to go the a Trans AM 6.6. 1980's- The Fox Body mustang. 1990's- Still gonna have to go with the fox Body up until 99 when the LS1's came around. 2000's- The LS1's carried the torch until the 03-04 cobras came around. 2008- The C6 vette.
To me, nothing can touch a new C6 vett as far as out of the box performance, but the 03-04 cobras are becoming the Fox bodies of yesteryear, Put 2k into a termie and you now have 500 horse to the wheels. And thats just doing the basics.

I would say 60's-early 70's were defined by the "true muscle cars" IE the Chevelles, Road Runner, GTO's 50's it was all about the Vette LAte 70's the Bandit T/A was killer (but slow) 80's the Fox body was it 90's the Lt1 then later the LS1 00's the C6 ZO6 is a killer deal

+1. And up until the LT1 finally graced the engine bay of the f body, the fox body was the king. But I still say that the dusters/demons of the early 70s were badass.

Not trying to be a dick, but are we only allowed to pick American cars, or is everone just picking American cars????
I kinda hope the former....
Its really about the fact that its only recently like the past 2 or 3 years that I really got into cars and started to understand about the certain strengths or certain cars. Plus when I was growing up there was no fast imports in the area and after F&F hit every kid got a fart cannon on any import and kind of made me biased.

I just find it odd, that until the last post before mine, NOONE listed a single car that wasn't American. I mean the 50's Bel Airs and early Vettes as the defining and/or quintessential performance cars???? Okay.....

For 90s I'll have to go with the LS1/2JZ For 2000s I think the 03/04 Cobra deserves a spot up there. It may not be as fast stock as a Z06/ZR1 but so far it's definitely been modded to hell and back.
