I have a problem that just came up out of no where recently... I barely noticed it about 2-3 weeks ago and it isn't a consistant thing.

Here is the wtf on it ------

I start my car, let it idle for a bit to get it a lil warmed up before I take off. I drive anywhere. About 2-4 minutes later the heat gauge rises slowly, passes halfway mark, continues to go slowly to overheat.

Here is how I fix it while driving ---

During motion on the road I can pop it into neutral and let off the gas. It slowly drops. I can even pop it into gear and it will be fine, even floor it and it won't start up again. It never overheats again after that during driving.

When it starts to do that and I am coming to a stop, I can do the same trick (neutral) and keep slowing down as well. Also I can just sometimes come to a stop and it goes back to halfway.

What gives? Thermostat screwy/stuck? Other problem?

How I noticed this is because the light had dinged the other day (overheating) so I pulled over, checked the water. It needed a little water. I filled her up to the point it should be (when it cooled off). I ran it for a while to make sure it was good. It seemed fine. I then forgot about the whole thing thinking that I fixed the problem.

I checked under the hood a couple days later and found that the water had splooshed out a little (like it overheated while driving and it opened up). I then began to monitor the heat guage on a drive to drive basis and it doesn't occur everytime... just once every so often. It's not always the same routine either. Sometimes it comes down by itself without me having to do anything.

Any input? Any ideas?

I hate to take my car to the dealership. If I have to, I have to. If I can get away with fixing it myself, i'd rather fix it myself.

This probably isn't the problem, I did have a similar experience with a T-bird that I used to own. It used to overheat at funny times, for no reason. It turned out to be a bad head gasket. One difference though, you have a way of cooling yours down, I couldn't do that.
