View Full Version : Illegal Tinting
boxerz 04-15-2008, 05:33 PM Hi, I was looking at the tinting laws and in Maryland its only 35% light minimum must pass through. Well we all know 35% won't really satisfy most people's needs. For those in states with tinting laws around the same, do you have a darker tint and have you ever been pulled over for it? I want to go as low as 20% but than again I don't really wanna get in trouble but I doubt a cop would pull me over for too dark of a tint. I dunno, some of these laws are just weird.
ryan1994mustang 04-15-2008, 06:07 PM from what i have seen, MOST cops wont ticket you for 20% tint, but then again there are some prick cops out there. we had 5% on our vette and never had a problem with it, but it wasnt a DD. if they pull you over for speeding or something then they might go ahead and give you a ticket for tint too though.
20Mustang00 04-15-2008, 06:14 PM I dunno.... in MO it is the same... but some of my friends have had to pull theres off right there for being too dark...
skitso 04-15-2008, 06:39 PM what you do is 35 on 1 side then somemore on the other side and
it not really illegal it doesnt say anything about layering tint
Switch 04-15-2008, 07:23 PM Skitso, that won't pass the light test.
boxerz 04-15-2008, 07:43 PM i started tinting my rear windshield and it took a lot longer than i expected and i'm not quite finish removing the bubbles. it's real dark now, is it possible to peel off the tint tommorow re-wet and reseal everything like nothing happened or will the drying make it impossible or horrible totry tommorow?
mrdeep2001 04-15-2008, 08:01 PM if u let it dry, the glue will dry...itll stick to the glass. You may be able to let it go until tomorrow, ive never tried it.
Shock521 04-15-2008, 08:44 PM in md, cops arent allowed to pull you over for just tint. i think 20 is the perfect number if you dont wanna be bothered much but still have it pretty dark
cfMustang 04-15-2008, 08:48 PM Here in Jersey, you usually won't get pulled over just for an inappropriate tint job. But once you get pulled over, all bets are off.

Haha, that depends on how the cop is feeling that day. Its really a toss-up.
924banger 04-15-2008, 09:40 PM I think that is the limit here in TN, and I have like 25% maybe. I've been pulled over a few times since the tint for speeding and they never say anything about the tint....Of course I always roll my window all the way down and have it down before the cops gets to me too;).
94yellowgt 04-16-2008, 08:48 AM here in The Gay State of IL, the laws are you must be able to read a news paper through them but i had 5% on mine and got pulled over by the town cop and had to take it off or i woulod get tickets everyday until i did. sucks.
Dan04COBRA 04-16-2008, 08:57 AM Best idea is to tint to the legal max and play it safe.
I had 10% on my GT and I was pulled over a million different times for it. I don't really blame the cops, they can't see in the car.
britt21 04-16-2008, 10:19 AM I live in Ky. Not sure what the laws are here about it, but I have 10% and I've never got pulled over.
My friend has 5 % all the way around his truck, and like 25 on the front glass - He's never got pulled over.
buster 04-16-2008, 10:57 AM I had some Barney Fife wannbe from Birmingham, Mich try to give me a ticket for tint on Woodward one day. My car is totally legal (my sister is a cop and she has even said no problem) and he noticed I'm from [sm=signs003.gif]Ontario and said he could still cite me for this. What a moron.[sm=signs003.gif]
Nabster 04-16-2008, 12:30 PM Would someone mind explaining the obsession with these really dark tints? They look silly to me, I can't help but think of the waste of money to try and make the car look "cool" when it only makes driving the car more dangerous to others as you can't see as well.
Dan04COBRA 04-16-2008, 01:12 PM That's not exactly true Nabster and it's your personal opinion. 10% tint on my GT, I was able to see fine at night. The only real safety issue is the police cannot see in the car and depending on your local laws and how it's enforced in your area should determine what tint you use.
Nabster 04-16-2008, 01:28 PM Strictly speaking, tint reduces the visibility from the inside to the outside as well. Reduced light means you aren't going to notice the smaller light variations, say someone or something moving in a blind spot. Yes of course it's not like putting curtains up inside the car, but you can't say it doesn't affect anything at all. There are laws for reasons (most of them good reasons) and I'd be willing to bet there is more research and data behind those laws than nearly anyone drooling over illegal tint can justify (how many of you have reasons beyond cosmetic for the tint?)- otherwise it wouldn't be illegal. I'd be willing to bet alot of it is just sticking it to the man though, it just wouldn't be as tempting if it were legal :D
I've got a light tint on a grand prix (it came with the car) and although it doesn't change it much it definately does change the view.
Superman6TNine 04-16-2008, 02:12 PM yea maryland is dumb with that. i had 20% on my car for 6 months and no one said a word until about a week ago. i had to takeit off and im pretty pissed. i even found out that our cars have a VERY low tint out of the factory so with the 35% ur really riding with about 30-32%. no one can tell tho but if they use a light test ur car wont pass. i say go for it. im putting mine back on tomoro
skitso 04-16-2008, 09:38 PM ORIGINAL: Switch
Skitso, that won't pass the light test.
i know but its all about the techniqualities(sp)
alfredov6 04-16-2008, 10:15 PM i have 5% all around minus the windshield and i live in california... the gayest state of all when it comes to dumb laws
and i havent been pulled over yet... had it on for bout a year
PolozLX 04-16-2008, 10:25 PM There is optical quality tint. The laws are in place due to Officers not being able to look at the driver and visual quality's as well. Cheap tint is a miserable thing, I agree. Some people like the way it looks? Some people think green mustangs are ugly. I , personally, thinkthey make a damn good looking car. I also have 20 percent all around my car and 35% down the entire windshield. I did use Lumar and its about like looking through a high quality pair of sunglasses. Think Oakley. I'm not a big fan of the look, but I do have a ton of retina damage (welding, sandblasting, all the cool stuff) and its about the only way I can drive my car without shades. Plus I dont drive at night. Opinions are like...well, you know...
94yellowgt 04-16-2008, 10:41 PM theres a kid from town who tinted his tailights dont look bad but id just rather buy tail light covers maybe a little more expensive but looks better i think my opinion.
Burtonsnow157 04-17-2008, 12:19 PM i live in new york and the front windowlaw is 75% ive been told. i was pulled over the first month i had my car and got a 150 dollar ticket. my tints are 15% though. If you only dip 10% below the law theyre not gunna have good enough eyes to spot the difference and wont bother pulling you over probably.. . . even if they did i dont think 10 or 15% will make them give you a ticket
Kdog2112 04-19-2008, 03:22 PM ANything more than 35% is asking for trouble though. Why draw attention to yourself anymore than you have to? know what I mean? Even though cops arent supposed to pull you over for the tint, they will find a way to do so ...
hayden 04-21-2008, 06:39 PM The legal limit for where I live is 25%, and I have 15% all around minus the windshield and I haven't had any problems...
