The gravitational pull from black holes is the only object in the universe known to disrupt the speed of light and light flow. That is the exception to the rule, if you were traveling close enough to a black hole, and this would probably past the safety limit were you would be ****ed, light from any emitters on said vehicle would actually be pulled into the singularity.
As for objects moving at the speed of light, or getting even remotely close to the speed of light, a power source doesn't exist to do it. Even if we perfect a fusion drive or some kind of power source that ouputs more than it demands, it wouldn't be enough to reach near 1C speeds. And there is the all important bit of the equation, the squishy on that drives the ship. A human would be liquified in even a standard acceleration to half the speed of light. So a buffering system, anti-gravity, liquid emersion tanks, something would have to be made to protect the crew from the thousands of Gs being forced on them.
There is always the science fiction ideas of finding loopholes around the speed of light, since practically 1C isn't actually fast enough to get around the galaxy. You need to be going tens or hundreds of times that for practical travel in human life times. Finding out if science fiction's hyperspace, slipstream, wormholes, etc is the only real solution to that problem.
If humanity had the same drive it did back in the 50's/60's and kept that all the way until now, I have no doubt we would have a colony on mars, the moon, and would be half way into designing a extra-solar drive. But as usual, competition and money drives everything, and the sake of knowledge and the furtherment of mankind isn't a good enough reason to do all those things.

it's cute that you think the acception to the rule comes from black holes
All gravity is is the distortion of space and time due to acceleration, explained as simply as I can. Since light exhibits both wave like and particle like characteristics, it is affected by gravity, and flows with the curvature of space. Since no one really know's exactly what a black hole is, and how they behave (there are only theories so far, even stephen hawking is still working on it) we can't really say what exactly happens, but physicists do know that black holes really aren't holes at all. They are basically little clumps of matter that are so dense, they actually warp space and time which creates the high gravitation pul. It is analagous to thinking that there are 100 billion earth's squeezed in an object the size of a pinhead, which of course would warp the space around it incredibly.
Being that light sometimes behave's as a particle, it too is affected by the distortion on time and space, and get's pulled in to the singularity.
I like how all of you guy's are talking about something that has been studied extensively, and somehow you have become the authority on how it works. My degree is in this stuff (engineering math with a concentration in theoretical physics), and some of what has been said has mistified me. By the way, gravity isn't an object, it's a force created by the curvature of space and time, and the acceleration that results from it.
By the way, Hopefully you know that theoretically, if you were able to travel at the speed of light, time as measured by you would litterally stand still. It would literally stop. saying that traveling at the speed of light isn't fast enough is one of the most ignorant things you could actually say. If you were to travel at faster than the speed of light, theoretically since it's truely IMPOSSIBLE to do so, time would actually start going in reverse. You would go backwards in time if you could go that fast, and that is proveable

But of course we know this. Our astronauts have proven it by coming back something like 3 seconds younger than when they left. I thought everyone knew this.

today i was sitting in the cafeteria during abreak with a couple guys from my class, and this insanely hot girl walked by the windows that look into the halls beside,
then about 4 seconds later she walked by again but wearing different clothes
and i thought WTF?
THEN
the TWO of them walked by together
TWO
TWO
of them
and damn they were like smoking hot, like incredibly hot, and there were TWO!!!!!!!!! of them
twins, ****ing right...........
so we actually ran out there, and walked behind them... good scenery
Answer: its impossible to travel at lightspeed, as you approach the speed of light, you become infinitly more massive
the universe is expanding faster the the speed of light. or was at some point in the beginning.
that's not only impossible physically, is provable that its not moving faster now.
Did you read my "proof?" All questions are answered.
Your "proof" would undermine Einstein and Newton, which no one has ever been able to come close to do. You are quite simply an idiot if you think that anything you could come up with could undermine their theories.
Relative motion means that no matter how fast you "think" your moving, you still have every physical right to claim that you are absolutely stationairy, whereas light doesn't.
The universe expanding, that's funny. How can existance expand? simply put? it can't. The planets are spreading out, and the warping of time and space is lessening, but that doesn't mean that existance is "expanding"
Dude, for someone claiming to be an expert, if I were you, I'd get my degree money back because they short changed you. The meaning of the universe expanding is simply that it is spiraling outward just like our galaxie is in that universe. Eventually, we won't be able to see stars, or distant galaxies. Sort of like the moon which is getting farther away from us. We will loose our tides and weather will go crazy. I love it how supposed smart guys in one field think they know everything in all fields like astronomy. Dumb fuc.

It all depends on what you mean my expanding. Some people seem to think that somehow, there is more in existance now than their was at the creation of the universe, and you sounded like one of those people. That's just plain wrong if that's what you believe. I'm no expert on the physics of way out there, but I know that existance doesn't come out of no where

Wow, for someone who thinks they are intelligent, there seems to be a lack of respect evident here. Of all the great minds I have had the privledge to meet, not one of them was disrespectful to anyone, and yet you seem to love to lay out disrespect left and right.
You think because you have seen a couple after school specials, and maybe watched the discovery channel a little bit, that you know more than I do? You have yet to realize that this expanding that you speak of has only been a mere theory for a mere 20 years, while Gravity, General Relativity and special relativity have been shown to be correct for longer than you'r grand daddy has been alive. Again, this is all coming from measurements made with in the last 10 years, and yet we still don't even fully understand light, so how can your' brilliant mind claim to know more than einstein, Stephen Hawking, Newton, Galleleo, Archemides, the list goes on and on.
For someone who thinks they are super intelligent, your ego is quite huge. I know that I have a better grasp of the way the universe works than you do, I have taken many classes on it, and I have learned more about both experimental physics and theoretical physics than you could imagine. If you would like to disprove me, why don't you tell everybody what the 8 basic elementery particles are? The ones that make up protons, neutrons, and electrons. You could also let everyone in on what antiparticles exist, and how they occur in nature?
You're right, I don't know that much about astronomy, but I do know not to believe in elementery astronomers on a theory that is supposed to take place over the next 100 billion years or so. Do you really believe that 100 billion years of deterministic reality can be figured out from even 10 years of observations, with as limited knowledge as we have?
Now, unlike you, I didn't just resort to calling you a name, I showed you ^^^^^ how you are Oh, so ignorant to reality.
I guess I am dumb though, because somehow graduating from a good college in three years, with a degree that normally takes five, and graduting with honors must make me dumb. If you could, please show me the logic in how this is?
Ok, shut up dude. You insecurities are showing. I mention that I saw a show on the science channel that said they now think the universe is spiraling away from Big Bang faster than the speed of light, and a web site to back it up, and you get your panties in a wad. You threw out the disrespectfullness first, maybe you don't even know you do it, so don't be offended if it boomerang's back in your direction. Yes, Albert was a genius, but his theories have been proven wrong from time to time, some by himself. You ask what has happened in the last 20 years to provide the faster than the speed of light theory? Oh, I don't know, Hubble, other techknowledgies that allow for better measurement would be a start.

wow this thread makes my head hurt. 1/2 of this stuff is over my head 1/2 of the stuff here i know to be true and legit and... 1/2 of the stuff here seems to have been pulled out of redass' bunghole.
yes, this thread makes as much sense as my math just did.
