So I took my to a vinyl shop to get some stripes, the guy told me it was too hard for him and that I should get htem painted...So I hooked up with this paint guy who will paint the full stripes and take a ding out of my door and repaint that and everything will a lifetime warranty for $850. I told him I wanted flat black and he said that it would have a ridge to it because if he clearcoated it then it would gloss rather than be flat...so I decided the protection of my paint was important and have decided to go dark gloass black. I'll take it to him next month so I have plenty of time for all input.

B.S.

I work at a custom graphic shop and do stripes ALL of the time. It just requires some skill, patience and the right tools to get 'r done right. I've even wrapped the whole front hood of mustangs with business graphics stretching from end to end no problem.

As far as the paint goes... that's what I would probably go with if I went that route. I'd probably get redfire or silver stripes painted on with a small pinstripe of some color. Paint is a great option for long life.

As far as getting it to LOOK flat?? I've done some airbrushing and can say that you'd have to work with it a bit. Sometimes all you'd need to do is just put the clear on and sandpaper it with 800 grit a little bit to make it look "flat-ish".  It all depends though. I'd really think the gloss black would look better on your stang anyhow. Also they can MIX some stuff into the clearcoat mixture itself to give it a flat look to it. Some paint stores do this for you. I have a local PPG store that mixes up whatever I need and I am pretty sure they could whip up a batch of flat clear.

========!!!!!!!
Just did a search for it on google and came up with PPG Pre-Flat CC - DCU 2060 <---- that's the code you'd need to order it.
Basically it is just the clearcoat pre-mixed up with a flattening agent to give it a satin look instead of that full gloss. Not sure what is in your area though...

That price sounds reasonable considering it is paint that will last a lot longer than vinyl. Not only that, but they are fixing a ding for  you too.
Definitely opt to get it painted Vs vinyl.

$850 is a great price for paint and dent removal.  I did my own vinyl stripes, as did many others here, so I'm not sure why a pro wouldn't want to try it.  He must just not want to do it.

Another reason why I'd recommend paint is that my stripes are a year old, and over the winter, the front looks horrible.  Sand on the roads, and salt has really knicked them up.

Awsome, thanks guys. So I guess this guy isn't screwing me with $850, I think it may even drop lower because my wife just realized she knows the guy lol. And ty for the flattening tips.

I went vinyl since I just bought the car, and didn't trust anyone with painting it, lol. I also wasn't sure on what color stripes I wanted, so I did black first to try. My vinyl guy did my vinyl(front bumper to rear bumper) for $250. Some parts are chipping away, but I've been pretty happy with it.

I'm fixing to have it restriped though when I do my Roush hood scoop.

You do not need it painted. And just remember, paint is permanent, with stripes, you could always change your mind. It's also better when you resell.

The stripe place near me has a limited lifetime warranty on the stripes.

In my opinion, the guy sounds like he wants more money. He can do the stripes if he really wanted to, its not hard. Like one of the member's said, takes the right tools and patience. He knows he'll get more money with paint and he buttered up the deal with the dent thing.

Your choice though, but I'd go to a different place and get vinyl stripes over paint stripes IMO.

Nah, it's two different guys. The vinyl guy is a lazy p.o.s. I mean, he was complaining about the curvature of the bumpers and ****. So screw him. I'm pretty set on striping it so paint would be better for me, and if I ever want the stripes gone I'll just repaint the whole thing Alloy lol

I have thought about getting stripes on my car as well. I wonder how much it would cost to just get stripes painted on.

Also, xyster, I love you avatar!!! Where did you get that? I would love to get one for my car.

A-Icon, can you tell me where you bought your stripes? I'm thinking about doing white stripes.

thanks

when i bought my car, i told them i wanted stripes.... the new salesman ordered a pony package with the black stripe down the side and charged me for the pony package...the car came in, i was like "what the ?" "im not buying that" ... to make a long story short the general manager of the dealership put my vinyl stripes on bumper to bumper for free....and they even paid a shop to do it, i guess they didnt have the skill to do it, or time...

Mustangs4u, they are charging me $850 for painted stripes, that includes fixing a ding and repainting the door. So yours should be fairly cheaper...but the guys on here said $850 for the stripes alone is pretty good. So I wouldn't pay more than $900 if I were you.

I made my own avatar :P I'm a Graphic Designer/Illustrator and just whipped out something. I wanted it to look similar to my pony tri-bar emblems on my car but with a lil ****e that no one had.

:)
I wish they had it as an emblem. I'd love to put one on my car as well lol. Thanks for noticing!

OOOH We just got a plasma cutter for our shop too so I wonder if we can do a diecut on metal, chrome it, then do the paint part separate. Damn now you got me thinking lol.
