Rim Clear Coat Is Chipping away...Help me please?

cartel -> Rim Clear Coat Is Chipping away...Help me please? (4/8/2008 2:22:59 PM)

My Rim has Lips of 1" in the front and about 2" in the rear. The lips are clear coated, and its chipping away from the rear. I strongly feel that this is happening from road debri plus the speed's at which I sometimes drive.....I have also noticed that, even though the clear coat is coming off, its not oxidizing or rusting. I sometimes feel as to take and remove the entire coating from just the lips. The rest of the rim is painted in a Hyper Silver Coating which is intact...My first question is, Should I remove the clear coat? Do body shops carry the same clear coat? and I also been thinking on spraying the entire rim hyper silver.....Is this paint avilable at body shops? PLEASE HELP ME...ANYONE.......

Seems to me, you will have to remove the entire coating on wheels to get a fresh coat applied. Am I mis-understanding and your rims are two-piece? If so, is it reasonable to take outter piece off and strip/recoat? My guess is "painting" the wheel will only lead to future chips. You may consider getting them powder coated, but have no idea what that would cost. Powder coating would be VERY durable and you could get them all silver.
