WTF?! Deck/Amp/Subs - 4/8/2008 2:10:12 PM

I would think this is the right place to put this, seeing as how it involves my audio equipment. However, it is not for my mustang, its for my explorer.

Anyway, I installed an Alpine V-Power amplifier (monoblock) to power my two JL Audio 12" W1's in my 93 ford explorer. I connected all of the wires and they appear to be correct. (power, ground, remote turn on...)

Before I connected the remote turn on wire from my deck to my amp, the deck would play cd's and the radio perfectly. Now, It will play the cd or be tuned to a station but absolutely no sound will come from any speakers. The only thing that is audible is my subs. Whenever I turn the ignition on/off or I change from tuner to cd... all the subwoofers do is buzz for that moment. (kinda hard to explain) Everything worked when they were in my old car, and the Sony deck that is in the explorer worked just fine earlier today also. And yes the amp has power.

If anyone could help me out that would be great,
Thanks, Addison

mite sound stupid, but did you unplug the pigtail on the back of the headunit? or jar it possibly, to knock it loose?

...uh, pigtail??
i dont know what that is...

I did check everything on the back of the deck and they all seemed to be tight. (pre-amp outputs, harness, power...) Also, that sound I was trying to explain occurs whenever I try and change the track on a cd... IDK

pigtail is the plug that plugs into the back of the headunit.. with all the wires.

the whole system doesn't make any noise? besides the subs buzzing? did you try un hooking the sub amp?(just the RCA and remote lead, to turn the amp off)

sounds like loose wires or a bad connection to me, too.  ^^^ check those RCA's, and if that's not it check the h/u settings or something.  I don't know if sony's have low pass filters or anything, but that might be some of it.

You probably have an amplified factory amp somewhere and you didn't connect it along with your alpines remote wire...

Well... Maybe not, but check, thats about all I have the time to think up and type right now.

I think it has a factory amp, (at least my dad thought it did) my brother-inlaw had set up the deck prior to me driving it and all of the speakers worked so I left it and just added the alpine and subs...

Could someone tell me how I should wire my system in...

Thanks, Addison

yea, basically when the stock radio went out, my parents took it to best buy and they said they needed a special adapter or something in order to make the aftermarket deck work... IDK, they said it had a high quality or better package (stock) ford speaker system in it or something. My brother in-law had recently installed the sony that is in there now and I have just tried installing the amp and subs... Yes the sony worked completely fine before I hooked up the amp/subs, and the amp/subs worked great in my old car...

So this is why I have come to MF to try and solve this problem I'm having... I'm clueless.

UPDATE: I connected both remote turn on wires to my amp (ant rem and amp rem) and had the volume all the way up on the deck and could hear the subwoofers but they were really quite... sooo idk, there was also a (what my buddy and I think) factory amp bypass connector, from install edge, part number IEC PSI2

any more help would be appreciated...
Thanks, Addison

Yeah, like a few of the guys said you definitely have a factory amp. The problem is you can't amplify and amped signal. So no sound. What I had to do was run wire right to my speakers from my amp, bypassing everything factory. Running wire to all four speakers is a pain in the A**, but so is screwing aroudn with everything else. Deck rca's to the amp, then to the speakers from the amp and everything will work. Good Luck.

I guess I didn't read enough. I gave an explanation front and rears. Not sure if that will help so I apologize. So if all you did was install a new amp to an existing system it shouldn't have affected the fronts/rears. Installed rcas, ground, power, remote turn on. check the wiring harness, fuses, and ground. Check amp settings. Definitely check the remote connection. Did you tape it off or use a good crimp connector? If it touched anything it could have fried something. Fuses, etc. Hope this helps.

go look for a line driver.  It is a low level amp that will boost the signal voltage to a little closer to 8 volts where the factory amps like it.  Most small shops will have them, most big box shops will look at you like you are nuts.  Ebay has more then a few to choose from

OK... so the install edge part has all the wires that you would need to install an aftermarket deck, (it's a universal part) including some RCA outputs for the front (??) and rear... I connected the RCA cables to the one labeled rear and the subs now work full blast

....BUT still, the other speakers don't even buzz or anything. My friends that I had look at it (one worked at an car audio shop for a few years, the other works for a DJ business and installed his own system in his car and a few other friends' cars) both said maybe when I pulled out the deck to connect the wires to the amp, I might have disconnected a wire for the door speakers. However, I have searched the entire dash for any open wires and have not found any...

Any more help is appreciated... Thanks to those who have responded already,
Addison

have you started simple and checked fuses?  I can remember a customer in an explorer that was about the same year as yours that came into my shop, but this was when it was only a couple years old.  It was driven by an polite older man and it seemed strange that he was exchanging the factory cassete player for an aftermarket cassete player, and I noticed on the pre-inspection checklist that the deck had power but no sound.  He said the deck went out and he hated to replace it but what could he do, he checked the radio fuses and they were good?

I have said this often on here and for some reason everyone thinks I am joking but the circuits in the car are often linked, meaning that your wipers might get power from the premium sound circuit.  This was one of the cases as when I started pulling each fuse one at a time to check EVERY fuse and it was about the 4th or 5th one in I found a burned fuse, and when I replaced it the sound came back on for the factory radio.  I can remember almost being upset that I had fixed the factory radio and felt obligated to tell him since I knew he was perfectly happy with it and would probably not want the pioneer unit, we made a bonus when we were in customers cars but not if they return the product.  Being honest to a fault I told him and he was excited to hear that, and realized that I could have thrown the pioneer in and he never been the wiser and thanked me.  A week later his grandaughter came in to have the pioneer installed in her car and two weeks later my general manager came in with a great letter written to him from that customer praising me.  The honesty paid off for a change but again I am really trying to ask did you check fuses?  Did you check ALL the fuses both under the dash and under the hood?

Wow, The only fuses that I have checked are the one for the power cord to the amp and the one on the back of the deck... I wouldn't know where to start, I guess... I would suspect the manual would have something about it... right? lol

Thanks,
Addison
