my first post!

here's my prob:
I have an 84 GT with Flowtech equal length headers -I'm getting "heat soak" -too much heat on the starter...  if the car is hot  -it won't start. I got ThermoTechs heat shield for starters and wrapped it... didn't help  -so the car just sits... I don't wanna drive it cause I don't wanna kill the starter...

Does anyone make a heat sheild that would work?
or
Does anyone know what (year ect) mustangs may have had a smaller gear reduction starter so I can get rid of the stock bulky stocker?

Thanks

Um, not sure about 91-92, but 93's did come with the smaller ones. I have one new in the box. Mine wouldn't start after the motor warmed up. Seems the stock starter didn't like trying to turn over the 347. So I bought a new starter thinking it would solve it, it didn't. Ended up having to buy an aftermarket high torque unit.

From my experience, flowtech makes really crap products, but changing out the headers may not be in your best interest, although it might be a good idea.  I always thought Thermo-tech was the best, so I think your at a loss there. Pretty sure they changed starters in 93.  If its any consollation, I have ceramic coated headers, and the engine bay temps are really lower compared to stock/flowtech.  New starter would probably the easiest fix Im guessing.  Good luck; I know how much it sucks not to be able to drive it.

i cant see the headers causing that problem unless your running longtubes. the starter isnt near your headers with shorties your h pipe is closer.

you can get equal length longtubes. IIRC most decent long tube headers are equal length.

Header wrap is good and bad. On a track vehicle it's pretty much all good, but on a street car it can cause problems - I inquired about it with Borla and was told that it voids their warranty (header on my Subaru caused a CEL due to low EGT's and therefore catylist inefficiency).
