I don't see a problem here. I was running 245/40/17"s on 8" rims of my 85 GT for many years and had NO rubbing in any way. Was running approx. 2" drop as well. My 17" 40 series tires were slightly smaller diameter than the 225/60's that came on the 7" stock rims (enough numbers for ya [&:]) :)
