Justin thinks it may be a vacuum leak. I checked all the lines :  Manifold to fuel pressure sender. PCV system, fuel, etc and I can't see or hear anything amiss.  Gave him a part throttle datalog today, which will hopefully show a bit more info to determine what is going on.

Fun times.....woot.

Vacuum leak is very easy to spot. Simple brake cleaner will tell you that right away. I hope it's that simple but normally, vacuum leaks aren't so difficult to diagnose.

Thats what I am thinking.  Lines are good, no DTC's.....uses fuel like crazy (more then before....so both pumps are working).  Leaves me with, faulty MAF (which I think would show a DTC), or faulty injector(s).  I'm going to have to go over the lines again with a fine tooth comb.........but unless its something I can see, the datalogs are going to have to determine whats up.
With the engine knock I had before.....maybe its a tune issue that Justin has overlooked. Mistakes happen.......fact of life.

I don't know the particulars and obviously haven't looked at your car but from what you've described my honest opinion is it's either (in order) #1 - a tune issue or #2 your PCM.

Just thought I'd mention for those reading this thread and considering buying a whipple: This is an isolated incident. I've read dozens of reviews of members who installed a whipple and this is the only time I've seen this happen. Also, I've never seen this happen with the FRPP tune that comes with the whipple.

Cat: Here's the question I have. Is it possible that Ford writes a different factory tune or uses a different PCM for Canadian cars that would cause it to be incompatible with Justin's tunes? Just a thought.

Whatever the case, I will be waiting until the outcome of this thread before I pull the trigger on my VMP tune.

^^^^^ Very important to note. I am almost positive that his issues are nothing to do with the whipple kit.

Agreed. As far as I can tell, nothing, and I mean nothing, is wrong with the Whipple kit or any of its components. There were a few bolts "left over" and some small moddifications to the instructions were required, but other than that it was very easy to install, and all the components are top notch.

I'll be keeping you guys updated of whats going on. This weekend I will be taking a close look at all the vacuum lines and such again. I might prod Justin @ VMP to take a good look at his original tune for my car, to see if something has been overlooked.

All of this will be moot if Adam will build a stroker for me.

For now, I'll just keep pluggin away.  I'm excited for my new wheels I ordered: Shelby Alcoa "Super Snake" 20x9's and 20x10's,  with Michelin Pilot PS2's all the way around!! Buh Bye to the the heavy cast Saleens....they are not worthy!

Cheers

Do you not have a boost/vac gauge?  That would tell you if you had a vac leak.  Get a propane torch from the hardware store and shoot propane anywhere you think there might be a vacuum leak.  If there's a leak it will suck in the propane and the rpms should increase.

You can also diagnose a vacuum leak by looking at the fuel trims.  Not sure if you have a scan tool that can read fuel trims.  I like to look at mine using the aeroforce gauge.

If you have a scan tool, look at the Short Term Fuel Trim (STFT) and Long Term Fuel Trim (LTFT) values. Normal range is plus or minus 8. If the numbers are +10 or higher for STFT and LTFT, the engine is running LEAN. If you rev the engine to 1500 to 2000 rpm and hold it for a minute or so, and the STFT value drops back down to a more normal reading, it confirms the engine has a vacuum leak at idle. If the STFT value does not change much, the lean fuel condition is more likely a fuel delivery problem (weak fuel pump, restricted fuel filter, dirty fuel injectors or a leaky fuel pressure regulator) than a vacuum leak.

I stole that little bit of info from a website.  I was looking for info about fuel trims and what they mean.  This is a good article about them and explains why in closed loop the engine bounces back and forth between a rich and lean mixture.

I will be installing my boost and aeroforce gauges early next week.
Justin's datalog config file had fuel trims....so I'm sure he knows what he is looking for, more than I do.

Sorry I havent checked this thread in a while.  I have a relocated IAT sensor with the Whipple Tune.  Other than the fact it pulls tons of timing think the after supercharger air is at the MAF, I have no problems.  I think I am giving up 30 hp when its cool, and alot more when its hot.  I want to get a VMP dyno tune after my new clutch.

It really sounds like the tune to me.  Sorry to Harp on it but do you have the whipple tune yet?

Probably not that important but have you told Justin you have the new model Whipple?  Has he tuned for those yet?  Cant see why it would be that different but when you get desperate try anything.

What is your fuel pressure?

If you already have your aeroforce gauge you dont have to install it in a pod to work, just plug it in and hold it.  You can check a bunch of stuff.  If you want send me some of the numbers and I will verify it against my cars numbers.

Good luck.

It would definitely make a difference. I can't believe I never thought of this yet. If Justin's tunes are close to maxing out performance on a Gen 1 whipple, then they would be far too aggressive for a Gen II whipple. The Gen II whipple flows more air with the same size pulley! Get Justin on the horn and mfind out if his tunes account for differences between the Gen 1 and Gen II kits.

i dont think the gen II rotors make that much of a difference in the tune.  i am running the VMP tune w/ the gen II whipple and had no problems.  i hope you figure this out.

After Justin looked at the part throttle datalogs from idle to 6000 RPM, he has a feeling my car is just different. At idle, the fuel trims were showing a 22% correction, but above that it was only a 5% correction. I think this means no vacuum leak.

He has given me a new tune with 2* timing pulled, and +3% fuel increase at WOT. Until I get a few runs with a/f, he can't do any more. I'm getting dyno tuned next tuesday anyhow, so I will pass the datalogs etc on to him so he can confirm his theory.
