Ok..I am not mechanically inclined here but I can understand mostmods as far as how they help a cars hp or just make it go faster. Can ya'll explain to me the advantage of replacing the stock shifter with an after market one? Also, could you tell me the best after market one to replace the stock one with. I am sure that its probably a personal opinion just like most everything else but I don't understand I guess how this helps or which one to look at getting if it is truely a big help. I noticed the Shelby shifters will adjust for the persons desired height but there has to be more then that! Thank you in advance for any and all help. Oh...I have a 2005 Mustang Gt with a Manual shift transmission. Its Legend Lime in color which from what I have been told makes it have at least 15 more Horsepower! Best shifter, hands down is the MGW shifter. Its just a preference thing as far as any "advantages". Some like it because they do drags and because the throw is shorter, they can get in gear and therefore run faster.
I installed it because I like the more solid feel that I get with it verses the stock shifter. I may be wrong, but I'm fairly certain that most short throw shifters have adjustments on them that can add or shorten throw legnth. As far as height, I'm not familar with the Shelby one, but I know MGW's has the ability to adjust for height as well (within some limits).
Everything else being equal, I like MGW's shifter the best because of the "customer support". I was in the "test" group when they were first released. I was very impressed with it, but over the last year or so that they have been "out" there have been at least two or three "improvements" made to the shifter based on feedback he received. In every circumstance of an improvement, I recieved an "updated" part. I have never EVER bought something and had a vender send me updates without me asking first, and I received every one shipped to my door at their expense. In two of the three times I received items from them, I didnt even know there had been any update at all....I just went out my front door and found a box from them. This just isnt done these days and I can honestly say, due to their extremenly excellent customer service I will purchase items from them at every opportunity when they carry something I want/need.

Advantages of aftermarket shifter - shorter throw, adjustability, more 'feel', stronger (think banging gears really hard), less missed shifts, no doubt about engament (think "thunk" "thunk" as it moves to neutral and then to next gear), custom look.
Best manuf- thats all opinion unless you hear from someone who has spent lots of time with each of the various shifters. The reality is most of us only use the one we bought, and thus thats the one we recommend. My choice was MGW also. I 2nd the customer service comments. It is really exceptional quality, more like a surgical instrument than an automotive part.But...you pay for it, its about $100 more than the Hurst.
If all you have ever known and are use to is a stock shifter in an American car, then its probably hard to understand or believe a shifter can make a big diff. But once I switched and got use to it, there is a big difference, going back to stock now feels "mushy" and disconnected. Be aware though, the MGW (and from what I've heard the others as well) is "notchy" - meaning it takes more effort than stock. The shifter actually clicks into place, with an audible "thunk" that you can feel, its a very positive movement and stop. Not everyone loves it because its not whatyou'd call smooth and effortless.
Another happy MGW customer here. As far as the shifters go, it's the priceiest one for out cars, but the old adage STILL holds true to this day - you get what you pay for. And in this case, even being the most expensive out there, it's still the best value. The customer service ALONE makes it worth it. +1 on parts showing up. Didn't even call "Have you had this problem? We'll ship a replacement part". Nope. They just shipped it, with a note that says "If you ever experience this, here's the replacement part for it. We recommend installing it now, but you can wait and see" type of thing. Those guys are the best when it comes to shifters/customer service!
There are a lot of local guys who have Hursts, Pro-5.0's, Tri-ax's, and some with the shift blocks.. Every single one of them that hops in my car and rows the gears wants to switch.
I'm very happy with my Hurst. The install was easy, even for a n00b like me. A performance advantage would it would make you shifting faster and more consistent. If you still have problems hitting 3rd after an MGW or a Hurst, get a K-member brace and torque limiters.
I just did the bushing replacements from steeda to firm it up. The stock shifter was pretty vague to me, and the bushings made it feel much better. The stock throw isn't bad, although I wouldn't mind if I could get the shift knob a little closer to the wheel.
