Default Widest tire on a 9inch rim.....

I already have 255/45/18 on my car all four...however I am looking to upgrade my tires for better quality summer tires. looking at bfg kdw 2's ; 255/45/18 up front and maybe 275/40/18 in back...I believe that is wide as I can put on a 18x9 rim...correct? any advice will be helpful,,,TJ

Here are the KDW2 specs from the BF Goodrich site http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/specs...-a-kdw/22.html

The stock tires are 27" diameter and the ones youselect should match this or they will lower your car and not fill up the wheel wheels if you go smaller.the 255/45/18 are 27" and 285/40/18 are 26.7 which is close enough and both of these fit on 9" rims.

are you sure the 285/40/18 will fit a 9" rim. The link you posted states otherwise...please advise.

yeah I use that calc quite often. I was just looking for some that have actually used a said tire width and if it will fit. I would hate to have to buy 2 new wheels for the rear...then I have 2 extra 18x9 chrome deep dish...that I do not want to have sit around......I guess I can always try and sell them along with the tires...I have ...what a PITA..

I'm getting ready to push the button on 18x8.5 front 255/45/18 and 18x9.5 back 285/40/18. Just when I think I have it all figured out, I read a post to question my decision.[8D]

Good luck in your quest.

Most, if not all, 285/40's require at least a9.5" wide rim. There is a slight possibility of finding an exception that goes as low as 9" with some searching. It'll be an individual mfr's decision, as I think the normal 9.5" - 11.0" rim width range is froma Tire& Rim Association standard table.

While being half an inch below spec isn't a quite case of being on the wrong side of a pass-fail situation, understand that you would be sacrificing somethingin the way of safety margin and also in the amount of support for the tread. Tread support goes to both cornering response and more than likely into tread wear. There is something to suggest that straight line performance is better at the 'measuring width' than on significantly narrower wheels in that the tire is not being distorted away from its design shape.
