I had a friend rebuilding his C4 in his 69. He brought it in to the rebuild shop to have it finished. on the weekend he went to the track with it. On his first run the transmission lost every gear accept 4th. he drove it back to the shop that rebuilt it and it turns out they filled it with motor oil! there excuse was "that's what the books called for".

Where did he take the transmission to jiffy lube?  What kind of transmission shop doesnt know that you dont put motor oil in a transmission. IDIOTS. I think they need to  again.

This doesn't sound right at all.  I don't see a shop that specializes in tranny's putting in motor oil.  Secondly, how does a C4 in a 69 Mustang have a 4th gear?  Did he put a newer tranny in for the overdrive?  This story doesn't add up to me!

I'm talking about a shop in west Michigan. there arn't any good shops around here. He should have shiped it to Detroit.

My bad, I just talked to him again and it was second that was left. He rebuilt his old C4 to the racing C4 if it matters.

Oh ok, at least 2nd gear was left instead of 1st, it would of been a pain in the ass to get home.  I can't imagine a shop putting in motor oil in an automatic tranny.  Crazy!

i still dont see how even putting motor oil in it would of caused it to fail that catastrophically. also many manual transmissions use standard 10w-30 engine oil so its not like its crazy to put it in a tranny. they simply were retarded by putting it into an auto transmission

Yeah, I agree, that's pretty fast to break, but if I remember correctly manual tranny's take automatic transmission fluid last time I did my clutch.
