It would still have be a ford or mercury like a torino or a cyclone. I always like the fastback roof and the simularities to the mustang. Or maybe pantera, or a gt40 if you really have the bucks...
Before deciding on a Mustang, I was looking at a Factory Five Cobra kit. The only reason for the change was a back seat in a Mustang, since I have a 2 year old son and a wife.
1969 Ford F250 Ranger, Camper Special, fully loaded with a 390. I had the 1970 version of this, and like an absolute idiot, sold the darned thing. Worst "car" move I've ever made. As soon as the Mustang is roadworthy... again, I'm going to find another one.
As soon as work picks up again I will get a scout II to supersize for off road and I want to build a Model A pickup hot rod old school style with a flat head V8 when (if) the mustang is done.

Brand new Shelby, Roush or Saleen Vert....
In my small circle of friends we already have 62 Fairlane Pro Street (1500 HP 377W S/C) 67 Camaro (427 SB N/A) 68 Charger (670 HP 440 N/A ,still being built) 70 Roadrunner (Stock 383 stick)
Other than the Fairlane, we drive each others cars...So there is a lot of musle but not very much comfort for long drives..

what a cool thread!
I'd be happy with just about any of the suggestions so far.
If the budget was someone elses problem then a 250 series Ferarri (any long nose 50s/ early 60s thing) or a Shelby Daytona would be right up there. My all time favourite wanna dream own would be the 65 R model shelby. Hands down.
I am seriously considering building a replica Perana. It was an early 70's English Ford Capri turned into a rally weapon by a guy called Basil Green in South Africa. He had to make a few hundred road going ones for eligibility.
It packs a 302 in various states of workedness and is smaller and lighter than my 66.
A 2007 study found on average Australians walk 900 miles a year. We drink 26 gallons of beer. That means, on average, Australians get about 34 miles per gallon. Not bad hey!

Wow, there aren't a lot of mopars mentioned in here, i hope i don't get the wrong end of a pit-fork for this but I've always wanted a 69 Charger R/T as the alternate. Thats why i love watching that chase scene in Bullit because it has the two cars that I want SOOOO bad in my garage.
I would have a Porsche 911 Turbo from the old days (the 930). Even though I like classic American cars a lot, you guys have to admit that those Porsche are the best
(and I am not telling this because my second car is a cute 1986 911 cabriolet)
New Cars- 2009 Corvette ZR1 2009 Shelby Cobra GT500KR vert
Classics- 1967 Stingray 427 aluminum block vert 1970 Hemi Cuda vert 1968 Charger R/T made to look like the General Lee 1964 A/C Cobra 427
