Default Motor wont start

i need some help! can someone explain the whole cam timing thing to me,
i have a 1988 2.3l turbo motor that i had put together with a aftermaket cam installed in itinstalled it in a ranger now it seems not to start, it turns over gets fuel and spark but it wont run at all.so i thought i would start with looking at the timing. i put the crank and #1 piston at top dead center then looked at the cam and its marks and noticed that they dont line up. is this possibly the reason why my motor wont run at all.i was told by the shop that long blocked it that they timed it,but something does'nt look right on the cam markings"to me"

Yes, because your cam timing will be really fugged do it will only light nothing because it needs air, fuel compression and spark to start

thanks for your help. So i lined the cam up and it fired right up. I timed it at 10degrees before TDC. But i notices that it idles good for a bit then it drops ratically and starts to die. Know all the senors are the orginal could it be the VAF..?? Or what could be wrong.

Whats it idle at cold?

I know my car did this, cleaned the IAC, reset the TPS, and upped my idle. Problem solved

First 3" exhaust on a N/A is a no no unless its a V8.

During warm up or when its warmed up?

The TPS needs to be retuned, or turned to get the voltage between .93 & .99

Plug the EGR back in if its working properly.

IAC - Idle Air Control (about a 5-6" cylinder on the side of the TB)
