Default 5 quart and 1 quart = 6 quarts of Oil ? Help Me!!!

How many quarts of oil do we need in our 2007, V8 GT 4.6L ? Is it not 6 quarts? Well I had a 5 quart Bottle and a 1 quart bottle and poured it all in.....gave it time to settle, then started it up........I looked for leaks and there was none.......I then looked at the dip stick and it does not reach the top line for filled......Should I add more till I get it to the full line?

The GT's take 6 quarts.

Did you put a little in the oil filter before putting it on? If not then it'll take a little bit to fill the filter and give you an accurate reading from the dip stick. I do the same 5 quart jub + 1 quart every time I change my oil and I always get the level just over midway on the dipstick.

Ditto on the just over midway with 6 quarts. IF I don't let it drain for a lengthy time, the 6 quarts might just hit the top line. But just over midway works for me. No need and no sense to fill it right up to the line unless you're anal and NEED it to the line. Your crankcase is considered full if the level is between the lower and upper line on the dipstick.

I do all my own oil changes and fill the filter as much as I can and buy 7 quarts so I have extra after I put the 6 quarts in after the oil and filter change. When all is said and done it usually takes about 6.25 + quarts to get to the top of the fill line. I let the oil drain for like 20 minutes ( I know long time but I want all the old oil out and replaced with new and I like to detail the motor while waiting). J

You don't need to pre-fill the oil filter! Oil changing steps.

1. Jack it up
2. Pop the hood
3. Crawl underneath and take out the drain plug, obviously using something to catch the draining oil
4. You can either way till the oil drains, then plug it and go to the oil filter, or you can drain them both at the same time. Depending if you have a large enough oil pan to catch all the oil.
5. Lightly spread some new oil around the seal of the new oil filter, screw it on hand tight. No need to go crazy with tightening it on there. It will help when it comes time to take it off, depending on your strength though you may need to use a filter wrench to tighten it up more, dunno.
6. Make sure filter is snug, and drain plug is as well (don't over tighten this one for sure. Make it snug, then just a little more for good measure.)
7. Fill the oil till it reads to the full line on your dip stick. Just pour in 5 quarts and see what it reads. Then start the car for about 5-7 seconds to charge your oil filter. (Hence why you don't need to pre fill your filter, also when you start your car make sure you loosely put the filler neck cap back on so no oil comes up and mists your engine bay) Once you re-check the oil add as needed with your last quart.

When checking your oil, make sure you check both sides of the stick; whichever is lowest is your "true" reading. Meaning if one side shows full and the other side shows half, then you are half. If you're halfway, you're good. Try to aim inbetween half and completely full and you're safe. If you want to add more than that to reach the "full" line, then it's not needed. I wouldn't go out and buy another quart of oil just to put that .025 in to make it read the top full line; but that's just me.

PS, wipe down your oil pan and any of your components when changing your oil... When the oil drains from the filter it'll get all over your sway bar, etc so just wipe it off with a clean rag. Build up of oil/dirt/etc is nasty and hard to get off. I'm sure I don't need to tell you guys this thing because if you wanted a ****ty job you'd just take it somewhere and have it changed... but figured someone out there might go... "ah well, it'll just wash off the first puddle I hit."

Maybe it isn't a requirement to pre-fill the filter, but it's a good idea to do so. Doing this cuts a second or two off the time it takes to get full oil flow to the bearings and cam/followers in particular, so it's cheap insurance. Even 1/3 full on a side-mount oil filter (to avoid a mess) beats installing it completely empty.

Regarding the oil level - in moderate driving or milder, having the oil anywhere within the range is OK, though being nearer the top is still better than being at the midpoint or lower. BTW, mild to moderate describes the driving of the vast majority of drivers, and possibly that of even the majority of the members here.

But that's not good enough when you're running the car hard, mostly if it's hard cornering that's involved, and some of us really do drive that hard on at least a semi-regular basis. In that case, you absolutely want the oil level to be no lower than at the very top of the range. I don't know yet about the 4.6, but for all of my other engines I will actually overfill them by somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 quart just to further help avoid the possibility of extreme cornering plus body roll plus oil trapped in the valve covers by the g-forces causing the pickup to become uncovered (and the pump to then suck air). That's a well-known and cheapie "fix" for OE oiling systems in road racing and autocross.

After moving to NC last year I changed over to Amsoil from Red Line. Amsoil can supply you with data sheets telling you what filters, fluids and capacities your car takes. Their materials show 6.4 quarts for the '05 GT and 6.3 pints for the 5 speed transmission. Don't know how/where they compile their data, the Ford books says 6 quarts of oil.
