yeah, 30 mpg seems too much. i drove down to san diego from long beach this past weekend with clear traffic and the best i could get was 27.4 mpg based on the computer display. i reset it when i reached highway speed on the freeway and looked at it before i exited. my mph average was about 73. what am i doing wrong?

ORIGINAL: drtuba I dont know how you guys get over 30MPG, I drive conservatively and over the elast 8 tanks Ive averaged 20MPG. The best I can ever get is around 27MPG according to the trip computer if I set the cruise at 60 and never have any stops. If I have any full throttle starts the milage drops. Here is the data I have collected from my last 8 tanks of gas. Thumbnail Image
Did you happen to notice how many gallons the car said you used on any of the tanks? For me it is usually with in a 1-2 tenths of a gallon of what I put in, but I do not check it every time.

Cruise Control is a HUGE waster of fuel. I never use it unless my legs are tired. How does cruise control work? 1. If you are on a level surface, your engine will run at a constant speed. The engine burning fuel every second. The car will never "coast" and expend less fuel. 2. Going uphill? The computer will, depending on the steepness of the grade, push the throttle harder, and if the speed response is not quick enough, the transmission will downshift as the computer gets you "back to speed", then immediately back off the throttle... THIS WASTES A HUGE AMOUNT OF FUEL! 3. Going downhill? The computer will actually DECELLERATE your car to keep a steady speed. This wastes any momentum your car already has built up! And of course, wastes gas... OK, quick recap: 1. Wastes fuel... 2. Wastes fuel... 3. Wastes fuel... So, if you want good mileage... turn OFF cruise control. Allow your pony to coast down hills... Some hills around here allow me to coast from 65 to 90... trip computer loves that! Neat to see Average MPG climbing... 35...37... 40... 42... Coast at 95 and you can even peg it at 99.9 MPG... Accelerate faster than the speed limit before you get to a large hill then keep your pedal steady... you will lose speed back to the speed limit (or a little under)... no big deal, you will gain it back at the crest of the hill... AND you will be able to back off the throttle... That's how we get good mileage, and have fun driving our Mustangs. Try it and let us know if your mileage improves. SOHC
