View Full Version : MPG
T.J. King 04-16-2005, 10:23 AM I noticed on the thread "210hp" that the CAFE standards were mentioned along with a comment about the relatively low MPG of the new V6. CAFE allows for a MPG average for the entire car fleet from a company. The Stang V6 is only a part of the total fleet. I don't think 210 hp rateing had much to do with CAFE. The historic mix of V6 to V8 in the Mustang has been 60-70% 6cyl.
As far as MPG of the new V6, I"m very impressed. Before I give the MPG I've been getting I want to say this. The MPG feature in the fancy/schmancy IUG package has proven to be pretty accurate. I've checked a couple of times and it has been within a few tenths of my figures. The other point is that I do very little stop and go driving. I live 24 miles from the town where I conduct most of my business. It is a small town without many stop lights. The worse mileage I have gotten is 25.3. The best, yesterday, on a 126 mile round trip is 29.5.
What MPG are you folks getting?
BradC 04-16-2005, 01:42 PM I don't have the IUP but I have an application on my Palm pilot that calculates the MPG. My average since I got the car has been 20.79. The best I've gotten was 27.9 and the worst was 17.0 (I must have been driving really crazy that week.)
cheysdaddy 04-18-2005, 12:29 PM I drive almost strictly in town and get around 15-16
afixer 04-18-2005, 11:43 PM just got back fron my trip to san jose put about 800 miles up back and around. 26.5 mpg average
Bruno 04-19-2005, 09:10 AM I get 21-22 with a mix of highway and city. The auto seems to work really well in mixed driving, but I'm a bit disappointed with the highway mileage, I only get about 27
vb101 04-19-2005, 06:55 PM Maybe it's the way I drive but in mixed driving, ~40/60 city/highway, I'm getting a little over 26 mpg. I drive relatively conservatively most of the time but not always. My strictly highway driving is over 30 mpg. My best strictly highway mileage was about 33.5 mpg.
Much better mileage than what I expected.
T.J. King 04-19-2005, 09:41 PM That is what I think, much better than expected.
Tres Wright 05-02-2005, 04:21 PM I'll bring this thread back up... I couldn't figure my first tank because the dealership didn't reset the numbers when they filled it. I just finished my 2nd tank and got 25 mpg (about 30% city, 70% highway driving). The digital display showed 24.9, so it does seem to be pretty accurate as mentioned earlier. That's with maybe 10% use of the A/C, it's been pretty cool here. Oh, and 25% with the top down which probably doesn't help the mileage much :) But I was pleased, since the auto is rated 25 highway I was expecting to get more like 22-23 combined.
ponytx 05-03-2005, 12:28 AM I get about 21-22 and I drive half city/half highway to and from work. I do drive her pretty hard though, I could probably do better if I would slow down.

Ditto to that at only 700 miles. So I expect it to still go up.
I do also have a K&N air filter installed, other than that my v6 is stock.

I am on the market for a v6 convertible and want to ask what you guys are getting MPG on your V6 ?
UMTerp2010 06-25-2007, 06:52 PM i average 20.5 right now doing combo city and highway. recently took a trip to ocean city, md and it was a 109 mile trip and i burned 4 gallons. so highway driving is really good.
acrokat 06-25-2007, 06:57 PM I average between 20-22 in mixed driving. The best I have seen is29 on a trip from Michigan to Washington DC.
banka87 06-26-2007, 10:33 AM I took mine from Jersey to Georgia a couple months ago...32 MPG!!!
cvz_finezt 06-26-2007, 11:41 AM i get about 31 to 34 on the highway, and about 20 to 22 in the city. but on long trips i get about 40 to the gallon. gotta love them Big RIGS:D. on my way to el paso one time i got almost 500 miles to the tank. this Freightliner was in front of me for the most of the time on I-10 west. i pulled in about 50ft back or so, and set the cruise to 70 and just enjoyed my music. God I Love traveling!!:)
4Rowdy 06-26-2007, 06:08 PM I average 24 in town with traffic lights every 2 blocks, 27 hwy, with the a/c on all the time becuase it is currently a dry 90-95 degrees here right now.We are at 4500' altitude, so I am sure that has something to do with the gas mileage difference everyone is reporting.
I had a 03Expedition that I traded forthis v6 stang, the Expy only got 13 in town and 15 hwy [:'(], so I am NOT complaining about my gas mileage!!! :D:D:D
VictoriaRR 06-26-2007, 07:58 PM 15.4 average, almost strictly in town. It used to get about 19 when I got it brand new, then 17 last year, and now, well, 15.4.
*shrugs*
Damon007 07-04-2007, 03:18 AM I am getting 19 around town with the a/c on. I will check the highway miles next week when I drive down to san jose.
v6 convertible automatic
Derek245 07-04-2007, 05:36 AM The best mileage I've got on an entire tank is 29.0, mostly on the freeway, but that tank even included a few full-throttle accelerations. The best for a trip was 32 on a country road with only a couple stop signs. In town I get about 17-20. I have the A/C on probably 90% of the time I drive but it doesnt seem to make a big difference.
hataap 07-04-2007, 07:50 AM i do city/highway driving mixed and get between 20-23 mpg
tyzorg 07-04-2007, 11:53 AM ugh im getting 9mpg.. i think somethings wrong...well.. besides my heavy foot every 5 seconds. lol
ismellhonda 07-04-2007, 12:00 PM went on a road trip last week, with cruise control @ 85 i was getttin 24.8

I'd say something is wrong.
I couldn't get 9 MPG if I tried!
Did the BOMC Cruise a few weeks ago. 500 miles round trip.
Highway, backroads, traffic jam, parking lots, 25MPH zones.
STILL averaged 27.1 MPG for the whole day.

going on a highway trip next week will post what I am getting for MPG
Zrz11386 07-08-2007, 12:55 PM i get about 20 - 22 city driving with a heavy foot and alot of idle time, going to VA beach next weekend for my first semi pro football game of the 07 season, ill post my highway MPG when i get back
anyone in the VA beach area wanna see a good semi pro football game for under $10 come see the VA Beach Crusaders take on the Arbutus Big Red (my team) pm me if you wanna meet and talk cars, my Stang will be there all weekend........

Our 2000 F250 super cab, V10 w/ 6" lift get 12mpg!!! You had to have miscalculated otr something.
yomofoitzjay 07-08-2007, 03:43 PM around 17-20
GstangT 07-08-2007, 10:11 PM Nah.. being somewhat conservative in a city like San Fran I get about 13 14 with 91 octane. Used to avg 11 or so with 87. So I could see 9 if im on it everywhere. It's weird I get such bad mileage in the city, but I get about 26 27 on the highway.

amptor 07-10-2007, 05:59 PM I once had a guy tell me that my mom was incorrect telling me you could draft and save fuel off a big rig, but I could feel a rig actually pull my mustang once when I got in close, but I never see people drafting them here and I don't know why. You don't have to be very close to the thing to feel the wind pull on your car.
Anyway I just went on a trip and my meter is saying 23.6mpg but I'm not sure if that is mixed with my commute driving or what. My trip meter said 15 miles on it at one point, I'm not sure how all that stuff works. I guess it'll tell me in the owner's manual. But man you can get 32 out of this car? sheesh you know how they say those old vw bugs get good fuel economy, well... the best I've seen those old things can do is 32mpg otherwise you'd have to start doing mods to the engine and lose a lot of horsepower. There was a guy once who took a vw bug engine and took two pistons out and was getting about 40mpg from it running on 2 cylinders maximum speed is like 45mph. Definitely not the choice car any more for mileage especially when you can buy a small acura and it is printed right on it that it gets 32mpg highway. mid 70's vw bugs should only get around 28mpg as I'm getting 25mpg out of a modified 1600cc engine.
I'm impressed even if it gets 20mpg because it is a lot heavier car than a vw bug and it is moving more parts. Usually I get 19.9-21mpg with mixed city/highway driving. Some people only get 18.0. I wonder what the GT gets.
amystery2u 07-10-2007, 06:03 PM 25mpg
Timeyer 07-10-2007, 06:14 PM The ONLY way to truly measure MPG is to fill the tank each time and reset the trip. I do this and record mileage in every car I've ever owned. A little anal, but it lets you know that things are going ok.
I've only filled my new ride twice. The first was all highway, and I got 27.9. The second tank was a solid mix of driving and was 22.3. I live in Iowa, so there is barely any idling time. Zero traffic is great!

alsoknownazg 07-11-2007, 09:13 AM well when i am in the town, i get about 17 or so cus im constantly trying to get up to 60 in a record time. lol. no ticket yet. And on the highway i max out at around 28.
Damon007 07-12-2007, 04:47 PM On my recent road trip I got 25 mpg combo of city/highway and 27 highway only with cruise control on 70 and the top down. I think I can do better with some Marvel Mystery Oil and higher octane. I am well pleased.
Sancho805 07-12-2007, 05:50 PM what is the exact gallon capacities of our tanks?
Derek245 07-13-2007, 12:14 PM Supposed to be 16 gallon, but the Miles to Empty display seems to consider empty somewhere around 15 gallons used, probably just as a precaution. One day it said I had 28 miles to empty and i figured it must only have about a gallon left, but it only took 14 to fill.
Not long after I bought my car, I got it filled up, reset all the trip computers and got back on the freeway. The average mpg on the display kept climbing until it reached over 40mpg. As nice as that would be I knew it couldnt be right. As it turned out, the gas attendant didnt put my cap on all the way, causing the incorrect reading. (In Oregon you cant pump your own gas)

Oregon you cant pump your own gas
I heard about that somewhere, but never heard why you can not pump your own gas??? So please tell!
Derek245 07-13-2007, 06:58 PM I dont really know why its a law but I should know beacause I get asked all the time since I manage a store with a gas station. The voters have rejected the idea of becoming self serve, maybe for the convenience, and to provide more low end jobs. I think New Jersey doesnt allow self serve either. I find it is nice not to have to get out of the car when getting fuel, but at the same time I hate letting someone else mess with my car.
Zrz11386 07-15-2007, 10:06 PM I know that in New Jersey you cant pump your own, to provide more jobs, but i live in Baltimore and couldnt imagine having someone else pump my gas, plus tipping them after filling up with gas prices being as high as they are would jus irratate me more.
But anyway im back from my football game in VA Beach, we lost 32-23, but the trip was nice. 250 mile trip one way, and i made it there in a little over a half tank of gas, but i figured it out to be around 33 mpg, all highway, with a little traffic at one point, but hardly anything to affect the MPG......
Next road trip.......have to check the schedule.......
drtuba 07-17-2007, 02:19 PM I dont know how you guys get over 30MPG, I drive conservatively and over the elast 8 tanks Ive averaged 20MPG. The best I can ever get is around 27MPG according to the trip computer if I set the cruise at 60 and never have any stops. If I have any full throttle starts the milage drops. Here is the data I have collected from my last 8 tanks of gas.

Sancho805 07-17-2007, 02:55 PM yeah, 30 mpg seems too much. i drove down to san diego from long beach this past weekend with clear traffic and the best i could get was 27.4 mpg based on the computer display. i reset it when i reached highway speed on the freeway and looked at it before i exited. my mph average was about 73. what am i doing wrong?[>:]

Did you happen to notice how many gallons the car said you used on any of the tanks?
For me it is usually with in a 1-2 tenths of a gallon of what I put in, but I do not check it every time.
drtuba 07-17-2007, 03:56 PM nah, I dont usually check the gallons used portion on the computer. I did just do an average error for the MPG calculated VS MPG computer and over the 8 tanks its at .2 MPG

OK,
You mentioned setting "cruise at 60"...
Cruise Control is a HUGE waster of fuel. I never use it unless my legs are tired.
How does cruise control work?
1. If you are on a level surface, your engine will run at a constant speed. The engine burning fuel every second. The car will never "coast" and expend less fuel.
2. Going uphill? The computer will, depending on the steepness of the grade, push the throttle harder, and if the speed response is not quick enough, the transmission will downshift as the computer gets you "back to speed", then immediately back off the throttle... THIS WASTES A HUGE AMOUNT OF FUEL!
3. Going downhill? The computer will actually DECELLERATE your car to keep a steady speed. This wastes any momentum your car already has built up! And of course, wastes gas...
OK, quick recap:
1. Wastes fuel...
2. Wastes fuel...
3. Wastes fuel...
So, if you want good mileage... turn OFF cruise control.
Allow your pony to coast down hills... Some hills around here allow me to coast from 65 to 90... trip computer loves that! Neat to see Average MPG climbing... 35...37... 40... 42... Coast at 95 and you can even peg it at 99.9 MPG...
Accelerate faster than the speed limit before you get to a large hill then keep your pedal steady... you will lose speed back to the speed limit (or a little under)... no big deal, you will gain it back at the crest of the hill... AND you will be able to back off the throttle...
That's how we get good mileage, and have fun driving our Mustangs.
Try it and let us know if your mileage improves.

Damon007 07-18-2007, 12:18 AM I am going to run some Marvel Mystery Oil in with my Premium Octane on my next trip, I am shooting for 30 mpg.
Derek245 07-18-2007, 04:56 AM Ive found that one of the biggest helps is when having a stop, if i can coast up to it rather than brake for as long as I can (without aggravating any drivers behind me). Ive also noticed that it seems to get the best mileage between 50-65. Any faster and its tough to get over 30

The reason I asked was, that is probably the real difference between your calculation and the computer's.
I assume, you are using how much fuel you put in the tank, but the computer is using how much fuel it put in the engine.
Damon007 07-18-2007, 08:22 PM I checked again tonight just for kicks and I am getting 25 around town using the Marvel Mystery Oil mixed in with my gas.
I know I am going to get 30 on a trip.
I am very please with my mpg. I was driving a toyota tacoma truck that everyone thinks is so good on gas but I get 2-3 mpg better than that truck.
drtuba 07-19-2007, 06:33 AM Assuming the computer is accurate then the amount of gas I put in the tank should be the same as the amount going into the engine. This of course is over time, not just one fill up. I just got tuned by Justin at VMP tuning last night so Ill make sure to report back and MPG changes after my next several tanks.
dotsonian 07-19-2007, 08:55 AM I agree, but also add that if the computer is accurate and over time fillup gas = computer gas then over time your mpg = computer mpg.
drtuba 07-19-2007, 10:30 AM it is really close over time, the average error is less then .2MPG So far Ive burned 1/2 a tank on my new tune and I dont want to draw an conclusions until I average over several tanks, but Im averaging better then my best take on my chart I posted. Im at 26MPG so far.
harleystang 07-19-2007, 11:21 AM I'm getting around 25...that's combined mountain (up to 8000 plus feet and down again) and in town driving. It has been as high as 31 (down the mountain and to and from Palm Springs on the freeway...I'm cool with that...
06BlackStang 07-19-2007, 10:57 PM I do alot of highway driving on my way to work and I'm getting about 24-25
