Have any of you bid on an Ebay item, not won the bidding, and then had the seller send you a message (through Ebay) offering to sell it to you for your non-winning bid? Is thisa scam? I just lost out in bidding for a car but then got this sort of a message.
I thought I read about this from someone on this board a while back, but I couldn't find the thread.
That's a second chance offer. It means the winning bidder fell out/didn't pay so the seller is offering to sell it to you rather than relist the item and pay more listing fees.
If the transaction goes through ebay then it is legit. Just don't do any transaction outside of ebay.

Be careful!! This is what we put on all of our ebays sales..........
PLEASE READ!!! CAUTION!!! BEWARE OF SCAMMERS TRYING TO SELL YOU PARTS OUTSIDE OF, OR AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS! Be aware of PHONY "Second Chance Offers" Always ask for a phone # or more pictures if in doubt! Recently there have been LOTS of PHONY SECOND CHANCE OFFERS!!! Always forward these to spoof@ebay.com
That's a good warning Casey and much more detailed than my response. Sometimes it is hard to tell if the second chance is legit or not since scammers are wiley folk.

Here's one thing that can happen:
Completely oblivious, you have a bid war with one of the seller's friends who is helping his buddy inflate the price (or they are tryimg to figure out your bid max), but they push you too far and end up winning themselves. Then they come crawling back to you.
I have had that one Polk. I have had second chance offers and always get a phone number and call and talk with the person. If you bid on a car, you should be able to call and go see it or get someone to go see it or have them take it to a dealer for inspection etc.

+1 - This happened to me. 5 minutes after the auction ended,I got a second chance offer. It as obvious that a friend drove up the price.

Always log onto Ebay through their own website. Never log onto Ebay though a link that is sent to you through your email.
There are "second chance offers" out there but like the other boys mentioned. Beware!
A spoof e-mail is sent from a scammer and instead of opening up Ebay's page on a new browser the user clicks on the big yellow Respond button but it's not a real Ebay page it's a fake and now the guy has your Ebay log on information.
Stu, if you are getting a SCO on a vehicle I'll bet it's a scam. He probably wants you to wire him $2,000 large for a deposit right?

That's what I can't figure out. The guy hasn't asked me to send money (yet) or anything. I'll have to monitor my ebay account to see if there's any suspicious activity. I definitely wouldn't send any money anywhere without first seeing a car and valid title. If something weird happens from here, I'll post an update.
Go Bruins! (Just got back from the UCLA/USC game...)
I have bought a few second chance offers and they all turned out legit - but they were small ticket items. I would not click on any links like this....I've had several scam attempts too. Here is how to tell if its legit: go to ebays homepage and then log into your My Ebay page. If that persons messages shows up in your Inbox then chances are its legit. If it is not in there, then its an email scam!
Winning bid or 2nd chance offer - I would NEVER buy a car via ebay without sparking up a PHONE conversation with the seller. If they are not willing to TALK with me, then I'm not comfortabe buying from them. I just bought a '94 F350 Dually off ebay, but only after talking to the seller a few times for about a total of an hour
