I have a few questions.. I got a brand new 08' mustang v6. and i was wondering what would be the best thing i could do first as in parts wise.. I was think of get a Cold air intake and than headers and then the FRPP exhaust. Would that be a good decision?? And is the FR exhaust good? Ive heard a few videos of thm but its hard to decide because of the quality of the video.. has anyone heared them in person and if so how are they? Can i get some advice on decent cold air intakes and headers... thank you
FRPP exhaust is awesome, the videos do it no justice at all. Headers are an expensive mod for minimal gain unless you plan on going F/I in the immediate future I wuold recommend other mods first.
A CAI and tune are the first things to do. Any decent CAI will not work without a tune(reflash),it will set off the "check engine" light. Vmp,Bama,Brenspeed and a few others are the ones to look at. Most have a power package(cai & tuner)for a good price. FRPP dual exhaust is also a good choice too,but the Cai and tune should come FIRST. You will like what the tune will do to your Mustang V6 especially if you have an automatic. Save the headers for later.

Hey Matt, welcome to the forum, bamachips is the website, they sell cold air intakes and tuners(hand held gadgets you plug into the recepticle under the drivers side dash). Doug Studdard makes tunes, if you read bama or Doug, they are usually the same. The 93 race tune, is a tune for 93 octane premium fuel. When you order a cold air intake/tuner package form bama and most others, you get a choice of 3 tunes (thats all the Xcal2 will hold). I have an 87 (regular gas) performance tune, a 93 (premium) torque tune (makes more torque lower in the RPMs, great for day to day driving, leaving stop lights, etc.) and a 93 (premium) performance tune (more power in the upper RPM range).
Because the new cars are fly-by-wire on the gas pedal (there is no physical cable that performs the opening and closing) the computer does it. These tunes adjust your ignition timing, throttle response curve(opening/closing), and on autos, shift points and pressures. On intakes that increase the MAF housing(bigger hole, lets more air pass) like the C&L, the tunes also tell the car to increase the fuel to keep the car from running too lean (not good). I have bama tunes, in an SCT Xcal 2 programmer, with a C&L intake that I bought from bamachips. There are many out there that have different brands from different tuners, that accomplish the same thing, the choice is up to you. But, If you do buy an intake that requires a tune, you HAVE to purchase tunes and a tuner to use it, or you risk damaging your engine. That damage will not be covered by your warranty.
On 87 tunes, it basically smooths up the engine response, and throttle, and if you have it, takes advantage of the extra air the bigger MAF housing is sucking in. On the higher octane tunes, they use ignition timing changes to take advantage of higher octane fuel's ability to retard detonation (pinging). You can use 93 octane fuel with the 87 tune if you have to, but you can't use 87 octane fuel with the 93 octane tune, the car would ping and knock, and possible engine damage could result. Are you following?
The Ford Racing dual exhaust kit for the V6, comes with GTA mufflers. These are a different part number performance muffler. The GT has a couple of choices, the GTAs (last digits of the part number are 50 state legal for sound, the 5GTs (last of the part number again) are only 49 state legal for sound. With the FRPP (Ford Racing Performance Parts) V6 kit, you get the 50 state sound legal mufflers, the extra hangers, the X pipe, new mid pipes to connect the X pipe to the mufflers, and clamps to seal the X pipe to the catalytic converter side and the mid pipe side (a shop could weld them if you wanted to pay for that), and insert that pretty up the holes you have to cut in your bumper cover to install the kit. Its not that hard, and if you're good with a wrench, only takes a few hours to do.
I have the FRPP duals kit, and JBA shorty headers (shorty headers keep your factory emissions devices installed) and are legal. I chose to do them at the same time as the duals because I was under there and had the entire exhaust system out anyway. They are the silver ceramic colored, and are much prettier to look at than the stock rusty manifolds. Whether they actually make a difference or not, I don't know. The car sounds much better, no video gives an accurate sound of the car with the duals installed. I had planned on eventually installing the high performance x-charger, the duals will help maximize the potential for a supercharger. With gas prices soaring, and not looking any better any time soon, I may not go that route. With a supercharger installed, you're stuck buying 91 octane or better fuel from that point on. I enjoy being able to put in the 87 octane when ever I choose to. To get back to 93, that requires running all of the 87 out of the tank, filling up with 93, and run almost a tank of that, refilling again with 93 before installing my 93 tune (the torque tune being my favorite). And you have to remember what tune you're running when you stop and fill up. Yes, I have forgotten, and had to retune to 87, that's why the tuner stays in the car. I even remembered that I had the premium tune installed, but didn't realize the gas station's premium wasn't 93 octane, it was 92! I was half way through the fill up before I notice the yellow sticker. Took a minute or two to reflash to my 87 performance tune then off I went. The car felt like a different car after the intake and retune from bama. It really seemed to uncork whatever potential was hiding in there. You can really tell the difference if you run the tunes for a while, then pop in the stock air box and tune, for giggles.

Great post themac5150. Does using the 93 tune give you better gas milage?
I usually use the 87 performance tune on trips, it's cheaper, and you never know what grade the station is going to have on the road. I was getting 29 to 30 mpg on the interstate going 70 mph. I have a manual, I put on the cruise and never have to down shift. Sometimes if I would be between 70-75mph. That was with the C&L, bama 87 perf tune, and the FRPP/Borla axle back. I haven't made any long distance trips with the dual/headers on yet, so I don't know if that hurt or helped. Around town, with the 93 torq tune, the milage is worse, because it's so fun to get to 45mph as fast as I can! Oh yeah, on trips, I'm not the guy passing everyone in the sports car, I'm the guy everyone is passing, cursing as they go by, because I have the audacity to go the speed limit(or dang close to it)! If I could survive on the road going 60, I would. They milage would be even better.

LOL themac answered it all perfectly.
I have the 93 race tune from bama.
FRPP kit comes with dual GTA's
other mods? CAI/Tune, springs, rims/tires, dual exhaust, some appearance mods.
Thanks, themac.. u helped me out ALOT. I have a few other questions for anyone to answer.. The FRPP Exhaust.. it won't sound ricey will it??? I'll prolly just get a cold air intake with a tuner. and exhaust so i'm HOPING that it'll sound good. Here is my question, i was on the Bamachips website.. and i found the (05-08 Mustang V6 C&L Intake and X Calibrator 3 Combo for $625.00,) Do i need to buy a tuner thing or what im confused with that or is the x calibrator 3 the tuner.. and if i need to get a tuner does the place i buy it from tune it for me before they ship it or what? Because im thinkin of get the 87 octane but also be able to put 93 in also.. I guess that right.. What do most people perfer the 87 or 93? Thanks

1. The FRPP kit DOES NOT sound ricey at all. Once you break them in, they sound even meaner.
2. a - The Combo that Bama is offering (C&L intake + X Calibrator), the X Calibrator is the tuner. b - You can choose up to 3 different tunes - pretty much everyone gets the 87 Performance as their base tune, but depending on what state you live in, some gas stations don't offer 93 octane, like California. If you're from California the highest octane rating is 91.
Like Mr. L wrote, the X cal 3 is the tuner, it's SCT's newer version. If you order from bama, and others, you get a choice of 3 tunes(you did with the x cal 2, I assume its the same deal). 87, 93... it's really up to you and your location, how much you want to spend on gas. The 93 tunes will net you the most gains in hp and torque, but we're not talking big numbers. The car feels more spirited, peppy, eager to accelerate. No way the FRPP sounds ricey, I get compliments all the time on the sound of my car. Just got one today, took the car back to the tint shop for their 10 day after-install check up. The guy said" oh this is that sweet sounding mustang. It sounded awesome running back in the bay" He asked if it was a GT, I said no, then he asked if I had flowmasters, I said no. Then I said, "Man, that's Ford Racing".... As I left, he and another fellow stepped outside to watch me leave.
I live in Pennsylvania, and we have 93 octane premium gas. Does Bamachips actually tune the tuner for you or what? And i dont understand how the base can be 87 but then u can change it into 93 or what? How do u drain all the gas out... Like one week run 87 gas and then a week or too or whenever u feel like putting 93 fuel in just do it. or do u gotta change a button or what? I hope someone can help me out.. I know the 05-08 mustang has 210HP, with 240 torque.. how much HP and torque will i have with 87 tuner and also if i use 93 and also with a FRPP exhaust? thanks. i hope im not annoying.

Matt I live in NC and the only performance mods I have are the following: BBK Intake, Flowmaster American Thunder exhaust. On the dyno I did 208.4hp and 248lbs torque. That was using just the 87 octane. I asked a performance shop that did the dyno if I tuned my car for 93 how much of a difference would I get he said maybe 6-10hp. Hope that helps.
