My friend Shawn has a 97 Cobra Vert, bone stock. He and his friend claim it gets to 160 and the needle starts bobbing back and forth. How do you think I would fair? He's standard BTW. Anyone know of a TRUE top speed on these things stock?

I thought those Cobras shut down at 155, and even if they don't it he is stupid for doing 160, especially in a convertable

aerodynamics play a part in top speed as does weight

Still, something putting 305/300 at the crank and having a top speed of 155 sounds pretty crazy. He now admitted he tops out around 135-140.

My cousin has troubles getting to 160 in his 96 Cobra with intake, exhaust, bored .20 over, and 4.10's. His speedo's a little off due to his rims and tires though. But, I didn't think that a Cobra with 4.10's could get there. I figured he would top out before getting there.

Yeah the guy must admitted to 135-140 being his top speed. No way something 305/300 was doing 155 stock, lol. Unless it was light as a feather! So what do you guys think will happen if I race this guy? Digg, Roll, what?

I'm not really sure. I think you may be able to pull it out. Those 5.7 HEMI's in the 300c/Chargers really impress me, for it being such a big car. My friend's mom just bought an '07 300c with the HEMI, and it surprised me a little, how it threw me into the back of the seat. I think you're rated at running a low 14 stock, and a Cobra vert would probably be more like a mid-14. I'd give you the edge on him.

Yeah thats kind of what I was thinking too. I know not to understimate him, and I have heard he is a pretty good driver. But at the age of 16 i'm a little bit inexperienced, this race isn't going down until this summer when I get my license. He will probably beat me due to inexperience, unless I can somehow afford to get some headers, a CAI, and maybe an exhaust or something. Should I race from a roll?

OP you're meaning 305hp at the flywheel right? I didn't think the 97 verts had that much power to the wheels.. A guy I work with has a 97 Cobra coupe and I took him by almost 2 lengths at the strip in the 1/4, and I had trouble getting the Mach past 150 stock with 285RWHP.. I'd definitely agree that his top speed would be 135/140, I just think he's not quite running that much power, UNLESS he's modded and didn't tell you maybe?

I don't particularly care much what I top out at, I was more questioning the claimed 305HP on a 97 vert cobra.. They have a 4V do they not? I'd like to think Ford's advanced at least a LITTLE in it's 4V technology in the 7 yrs between 97 and 04.. LOL

Yes 305hp at the flywheel, not to the wheels .

Ahhhh.. still, that DOES sound a little high even at the flywheel, because that would mean that ford didn't change the 4V at ALL between 97 and 03/04 when the mach's came out.. I had always thought that the mach's had a little more power stock than the 95-98 cobra's did..  Maybe I was wrong though, who knows.. I just know I haven't lost to a stocker cobra from those years before.. not saying it COULDN'T happen, I'm just of a mind that a stocker mach would've had the advantage there..

I don't know anything about those 97 Stangs or Cobras, but from internet searches this is what I got. Check the links below. I thought 305/300 was kind of low for a Cobra myself..lol.

Hrrmmm.. power's about the same, the 04 mach's like mine have the same 4V those do, but the mach's are rated at 325 ft/lbs at the crank and usually dyno somewhere between 305 to 310RWTQ.. They also have a 7k redline so it's got a little more top end than the cobra did.. That and the mach's 3:55.1 gears are the only differences I'm seeing other than the upgraded clutch and T-3650 tranny.. so guess it does have SOME advantages..

Still, ANY 4V engine is a good platform, the 97 Cobra's included.. the problem is getting it to put all that power on the road..

you're vaguely mistaken my friend.  HP doesn't play that much of a roll in top speed.  my non pi GT would top out at 140-150, and that only had 225hp.  it just takes a lot longer to get there.

Yea, hp plays some part in top speed, but gearing and aerodynamics play just as much.

I'm sure you could get a fox with 210 hp to the 140's, and I know new edges do 145-150.

As for the improvement of the 4V's from '96-'98 and '03-'03 in the Machs
the Mach 1 is a bit underrated from a couple of sources i have seen.

They also improved the power band.. they might only make max hp around 305 or so, but they are a lot beefier throughout the midrange.

Thats why you see quarter miles in high high 13's sometimes for a SN-Cobra, and the occasional low 13 in a Mach
