So, they're done all the time, but this one was interesting I think. Basically they go over manifold theory and in the end, test several intakes on a mild Chevy 350 with some AFR heads, mild comp cam etc. Typical street build. They compared the Performer, Perf. RPM, Air Gap, Vic Jr and Super Vic.

What suprised me was the rpm range on the Performer. The basic Performer made peak power at 6,100rpm, even though it's listed as idle-5,500. The Air Gap made peak power at 6,300rpm, around 20 more peak hp. Average hp and torque were nearly identical. And the Standard RPM made peak power at 6,500, more than the Performer, but less than the RPM(barely). The suprising thing was the the plane jane Performer still made power at the higher r's, and didn't sacrafice as much as I would have thought.

Now I'm running the new Weiand Action Plus, and I've seen a few others around here run it as well. Weiand ran a dyno comparison between their 8124 and Edelbrock's Performer(which they affectionately refered to as Brand E pn 2121 ), and their intake made ~15 more peak hp/tq and around 10 more average hp/tq on a similar type build, street roller cam, aluminum heads etc, but they used a rather tiny cam. Given the power difference between the Weiand and Edelbrock intake(about 15 or so) and that it was on a smaller engine, with a small cam....and the Air Gap made about 20 more peak hp over the Performer on a larger engine(perhaps with a slightly larger cam, given that peak power occured AFTER 6,000rpm, whereas Weiand's test had power before 6,000rpm)....I'm REALLY curious what the power difference would be between an RPM/Air Gap and Weiand's new intake. It would seem the new 8124 can keep up with the RPM series intake till around 6,200rpm give or take. I imagine that the RPM series would start to walk away from the Weiand after 6,500, given it's high rise vs low rise and the RPM's have larger plenums. So it would seem that for engines turning not much over 6,000rpm it's a good intake, especially if hood clearance is an issue. But I REALLY would like to see a straight up comparison between the 2, see where they really sqaure off against each other.
