Save up a little longer and pick up a 1999 or newer. (1999 was 1st year with IRS among other things.) You should be able to pick up a nice 1999 with low miles (60k) for around $14k - $15k.
Good luck,
(Nice looking GT by the way)

Maybe you could save up a few more months or so and get a 03-04? When that new cobra drops in 07, I bet a lot of cobras will be on the market. I want a cobra so bad, and I've considered waiting until the shelby comes out to see what happens in the market for cobras or a mach 1.
Probally gonna get Railed REAL hard for this, but get a 5.0 cobra in nice condition. I couldve bought a 96-98 cobra no problem but i knew that in the end, no replacement for displacement. The 5.0 cobras do have set backs, just like any others though. No IRS (You find that bad, then stop reading this) or any with an above 250 hp rating (R's excluded). and they did weight a little much but the motor is a 5.0, around since the damn dinosaur and it has gt-40 heads and better injectors. suspension is same as all others till the irs era as well in the94-95s. It will cost you HALF of what it will cost to mod out a 4.6 in a 5.0. dont belive me? GO price out headers, heads and all the other goodies for a motor on both, and have your calculator ready.

i was looking for a 96-97 cobra earlier this spring but a little too much $$ for me. i settled for a 94 Cobra however and i love it, although the 96+ cobra was what i wanted. havent had the money to do anything to it, but someday........ nice gt btw
FYI, I just bought a 2001 Cobra for $15K. High miles (74000), but I love it. At 10K you're not that far off. I heard a modified supercharged 2001 beats a stock 2003 cobra based on the 2003 config. I'm sure the 03 owners will disagree :)

I bought my 04 cobra in Jan of 05. Its now 6 months later and I love it as much as the day I first got it. People on the road must hate me, I drive like a maniac, but I can't help myself. Exceeding 100mph is almost a daily event for me. And, in my opinion, 03 -04 cobras are the best looking mustangs.
obviously, with 10k you cant buy an 03 outright, but if you can, finance the rest. if not, have you thought about picking up a 99+ GT and put TT or supercharger on it? could save you a little money, and you'd still have one fast car on your hands. just my opinion.

Why exactly do you want a Cobra? Unless you're gonna go Terminator, then I would invest that $ into your GT. If I was in your position right now, I would put a 392 short block with AFR 185's, TFS 351 EFI intake, 42# inj's, Comp cam, electric water pump, full exhaust, Black Magic fan, 3.55's and a T-56 in there. I had a '90 with a Lightning 351 in it. Dump the rest into good brakes, suspension, and stiffening. With that setup you would absolutely annihilate any stock and most modified Cobras including the upcoming '07. In fact, if you're just wanting a New Edge, then I'd sell the GT and get a New Edge V6, so you'll have even more money to build with. In the end, you will have a beast and the pride that it gives you to tell others, "Yeah, I built it."
If you have to have a Cobra, or don't want to do that much work to go fast, wait until the '07 comes and people start selling Terminators cheap. The reason I say this is that per dollar spent, you will not get as much power, handling, braking, and ease of modification, even with the 5.0. Drop any given amount of money into a Terminator, and you will get more results than with any other 4.6 or 5.0. Not only that, but put a blower on a 5.0, and you might get 500 hp, but the engine (usually) won't live long. Put a blower (for far less $, since you don't have to plumb it in), and you can get 700 hp or more with better reliability. I know because this is not exactly the first Mustang I've owned, but it's faster than my 351 was, handles way better, stops way better, and that 351 would beat any stock Cobra in all those areas. Yet I can put it up to 500rwhp for less than $1500.
"Cobra owner at 19," you need to get some experience under your belt and build a couple [budget] street terrors so you will know what you're talking about.
