Hi everybody,
I'm going to be installing a trac-lok in my '05 and was kicking around the idea of doing gears too. Those of you that have changed gear ratios, how much of an effect did it have on your fuel milage?

My '05 is going to become more of a year-round daily driver/commuter so I need to keep the MPGs up there, but I'd like it to be fun also. Are there any other mods that will help the milage and boost the fun factor at the same time?

Thanks for any help.

Greg

Well I've had my 4.10s in for a week now... and damn, my Pony has gotten more thirsty by the mile!

But I still love her

Just went ahead and checked, with a mix of city and highway driving, I got exactly 18.75 mpg on my first 1/4 tank.

I have 3.73s and I probably lost 1mpg. Totally worth it for me.

...  I'm lucky to get above 18.00 on a stock stock stock pony with lightfoot driving (never going above 2krpm.)  That's mixed city highway - mostly highway.  What gives?

And I just put an order in for a tlok and 4.10s with a VMP CAI with a 91 performance tune.

Am I going to be in trouble?

Typically, custom tunes are going to be better than the factory tune. Pair that with a CAI and exhaust and a slight bump in MPG can be expected. The tune DOES vary though. Doug's Torque Tune.. forget about it. I can practically watch the needle move left!

I'm starting to wonder about fuel economy and some of these mods myself.  Would like to get the car with automatic down to 0-60 in 6.5 or lower, not sure what all that'd take.  It seems to shift gears in a way that I'd assume would use more fuel than a manual too.  I'm up to 19.3mpg right now at 33mph average speed, bone stock.  I'm more than very happy with the automatic transmission though.

With 3.73s, my in-city mileage actually improved, since the motor's torquey enough to let you cruise around town in a higher gear than with the stock 3.31s.  At around 37mph, I could throw the thing into 5th and use cruise control - on level roads, this netted me around 36mpg with a CAI, tune, and axleback.  Not bad for in-town ;)

Highway mileage dropped 2 or so, ~26-27 at 70mph.  Not bad.  And the car was a blast to drive around town ;)  3.73s are highly recommended.

I'm running the 3.31s right now again in preparation for a TORQUE MONSTAH turbo build.
