So i decided to paint my stock 5 spoke rims. Sorry my pictures kinda suck.... used my camera phone..

items needs, 2-3 cans of Wheel coating spray paint. About 6.00 at autozone each.
2 cans of wheel coating clearcoat.
this stuff is amazing, drys so fast.
also, 320 grit sandpaper and 800 grit wet/dry sandpaper and masking tape.
a nice place that is not windy and some newspaper for overspray.

Step 1: Remove rims and sand down with 320 grit sandpaper. Make sure you remove all the "shinny" paint.

Step 2: Mask of the chrome lip with masking tape and mask off tire to prevent over spray.

Step 3: Take your wheel paint and apply THIN coats allow to dry. I did about 5 coats.

Step 4: Use 800 Grit wet/dry sandpaper and wetsand the rims. Be careful not to push hard, you do not want to go throught the black paint.. If you do dry it off, and respray and start wetsanding again.

Step 5: After it has been wetsanded and is nice and smooth, not orange peel looking you will apply heavy coats of clearcoat. About 3 or 4 coats were use on mine. Be careful, you do not want it to run. if it does lightly wetsand it down and clearcoat again... Let dry and ur done.

It is Dupli-Color performance wheel coating. nothing about gloss at all. But it is shiny from the clearcoat.

I did the same thing and HATED that paint. I think the caliper paint would of worked much better ... especially with the nicer tip and no need for a clearcoat, probably.

Powder coating would have been a better idea for long term durability.

you think tht paint would work and stick???? its rainin here in oklahoma and i need something to do i tthink im bout to do it today woulsd i sand it and everything the same

I wouldn't be painting if it's raining personally, too much moisture in the air. I'd sand them with up to 320 grit, two coats of primer, than 2-3 coats of the caliper paint and it'd probably come out damn good.

GA05GT: DId you have to remove the tires to do that? How about the weight? Will the paint scratch off if a tire shop is to install the tires back on?

Very cool!

Thanks,

Paul

Here's a better photo.
I probably should have just bought the take-offs and painted them myself. I'm embarassed to say how much GAS charged me to "pimp my ride"! Plus they didn't bother to take off the wheel weights so when I had them properly balanced I ended up with unpainted spots showing on the inside of the rims.

If you paint them black don't do them all black. I think I saw some that had the 5 V spokes painted black. Leave the outside rim unpainted. Otherwise it looks too much like a spare!

How long did it take and how long before they can be put back onto the car?

When I ask how long, that means jacking up time, taping etc?

Can someone who doesn't have a steady hand do this or should I have a shop do it?

what a difference it makes to the appearance...looks good

Indeed people have their opinions, and I supose that is not a good picture of what they really look like. When in direct sun looks good, the paint is graphite/ gun metal.

here is my question- what does the junction of paint o the polished lip look like? can some one take a close up of that? i am afraid of the paint being to high. then, do you clear coat the whole rim? or just what you painted?

Black07gt
02-18-2008, 03:52 PM
how many spraypaint cans did it take for all 4 wheels??

cwheeler
02-18-2008, 07:23 PM
It took me about 8 hours with jacking to putting rims back on. Any1 can do it take ur time. It took about 2 cans of black wheel coating for all 4 rims. I would just clear coat what you painted but it does not matter, you can do the whole rim. Its really easy just take ur time.....!! :)
