ORIGINAL: horseshoeing Ok, I am not trying to make anyone mad. I am just talking about motors. I know not everyone likes a 289. I am ok with that. In a road race they will sometimes use a V6 and they win too. Big does not mean better. More horses does not mean that you will win. A lot of it has to do with the ability of the driver, not just what they have under the hood, so I have to agree to some extent. But when it comes to the straight-away, tuning and raw horsepower wins out everytime. But from traffic light to traffic light, I will put my 03 Mach1 up against any other Mustang. It is "quick" at the launch. At the track, I have beaten many a Cobra. It takes them a whole lot of time to catch me, and the quarter is over before they can catch me. Now, with my old 289 stock, she is my baby, and I would never even consider racing her. She's old.

On a road race, more horses mean more fuel and that means more pit stops. A V6 is lighter and is easyer on tires and can take the turns faster and better. Horsepower does not win all the time. A lot of it is the driver. Mr. Soaring, Why don't you race you 289????? Old... yes, But it is not to old to race.

Have you looked at crate engines? Ford has some rated at over 400 hp and for what you get, in my opinion; it is the most bang for the buck

Isn't it actually easier to get big horsepower cheap with a big blog? Fuel consumption is not an issue as this will not be a daily driver. I know a car as heavy as my Mustang isn't going to beat a Honda in light to light racing but I certianly want it to sound as mean as possible and make that Honda think twice.

Then throw a 460 in it, and heat it up. It sounds like that is what you want, so just do it if you can afford it.

ORIGINAL: dodgestang Your slated performance needs can be met with any of the motor listed in the poll. You do not need a c6, you would be happier with a c4 because you will get more power to the back tires then. 400 BHP - 302 - large cam, aluminum heads, marginally streetable 400 BHP - 302 based stroker - can be pricey, would be streetable, some say strokers have a shorter life span 400 BHP - 351w - easily done, can be made more easier with the investment of aluminum heads, easily streetable 400 BHP - 351c - easily done, easily streetable 400 BHP - 351w or 351c stroker - overkill and a waste of money 400 BHP - Big block - easily done but price might increase depending on the motor choice. Also you run into some increased costs in getting big block bell housings for transmission choice. That's what some of us have been saying all along. Big blocks don't necessarilly equal raw BWHP unless you heat them up. The longer stroked engines just do not wind up as fast.
