Default 1965 289 Mustang engine oil brand/type?

Looking for some advice on an engine oil (brand and type) for a 65/289 4v.

Also, how many quarts to use on an oil change?

Thanks!

I use Redline brand synthetic oil. It lubricates much better than dino oil. I also use it in my standard tranny and the rear. It takes 5 quarts with a fresh oil filter.

I use the Castrol Syntec synthetic, but I am thinking of trying Royal Purple at my next oil change. Synthetic oil has much better lubricating properties than regular crude crud.
But if you are considering using synthetic, don't us it on a new motor, or one with less than 10K miles on it. The rings need to seat before using Synthetic oil. [sm=smiley20.gif]

Royal Purple is good, Amsoil is good......hell even Mobil I is better than dino oil. On some old Mustangs, the synthetic oil will tend to leak out from the pan gasket at first, but will usually stop after a few hundred miles. Gets kinda messy under there though.

Also use a good quality filter. I am partial to Wix or Motorcraft.

I use the redline filters along with the oil. Motorcraft and Wix are good ones too.

I just had the heads rebuilt. Should I stay away from Synthetic until they break in (how many miles)?

Thanks for the responses.

If your motor is original, or was rebuilt to original clearance specs, 10w/40 should work fine in most climates. Synthetics lubricate much better but if you currently have any seepage or slight leaks, they will become serious leaks real fast. IMO, if you are currently using dino oil and your motor isn't fresh, stay with a good quality dino and change it every 3K or so. I have a 21 year old Porsche 944 that has been run on Castrol GTX since it was new. It has 175K on it and the motor has never been opened. It still pins the oil pressure gauge and does not burn oil. This site: http://www.boss302.com/oil.htm has some good information regarding oil. As has been mentioned, use a good quality oil filter. Motorcraft filters are made by Purolator and are a good value. There are a couple of good oil filter comparison sites that are very informative.

Also, five quarts with a filter.

The fram oil filter is not the best filter by any means. It may be better than nothing, but not by much. Do some research on filters, and I think you will get the picture.
