I'll just give you the bottom line:

Going home last night around 2am, I was clocked going 91mph in a 65mph. There were no cars in front of or behind me, and I believe the cop was sitting on the side of the highway when I passed, and pulled behind me with his lights off until his was on my rear when he flipped them all on.

What I'm wondering is, this cop is a county cop, and while i'm not sure whether he clocked me in his county or not, I know that he did not flip his lights on until after we crossed a bridge that goes over a creek that seperates the 2 counties, at which point I hit 91mph. Is he within his jurisdiction to pull me over in another county?

I also noticed, that on my ticket, he wrote down an address that was about a mile before the point which he pulled me over, which is, of course, within his county.

If this is normal practice, please let me know. Otherwise, should I contest this?

out of his county is out of his gaoe... or general are of employment meaning he has no power, but he wrote the ticket for in his county or gaoe so hes golden in the court room.... he will simply claim ur lying about the location and unfortunatly the judge believes the police not the defendent. If you were smart you would carry a throw away camera and take pictures at every accident scenes or ticket to prove what car it was, your cars condition (all plates properly fixed or not) ticket is correctly written to the car, and location a simple photo of your car the squad car and a sign with the location on it or bridge would prove him out of his gaoe.....    sry for not proof readin im tired....

It's possible he got me in his county, and didn't pull me over til we crossed the line.

I guess I'll just pay it, that's what I expected, I just wondered about that. Thought maybe someone here had encountered it.

did not understand this before previous post it goes by the location of incident and not where your pulled over..... aka if you got caught in his county your screwed even if your pulled over out of his county......

nah, dont pay it, my friend.  talk to a lawyer first, he may be able to get you a pjc, get it dropped, or at least get it reduced.  itll cost you a few hundred bucks, but youll save that in insurance.  a lawyer will most likely just have you fill a waiver, and you wont even have to go to court.  trust me, this is coming from a guy who has had, um, one or two speeding tickets.  :)  good luck.

Look on the ticket, you should have a "video used" section with 2 boxes, yes and no. Use that aginst him(if you can) since you did not take any pictures.

I don't know where you are but technically, if you are a POST trained officer, you are working for the state therefore, you can pull anyone over in your state BUT, you really really don't want to step on anyones toes in another jurisdiction. You have to be asked or ask for permission to cross over and pull someone over, etc.

I'd contest it, honestly but being he is an officer, the judge will believe him over you. You might have a good day and get a break. Who knows? Good luck!

I am a police officer in AL.  We are able to issue tickets ANYWHERE in AL, but my arrest powers are only limited to my county.  Sounds like he got you speeding in his county though, and just didn't pull you over till you got into the other county.  He probably didn't pull you over right away because you said you were on a bridge, and thats an extremely bad spot to pull someone over at.

In any case, do what you can to get the ticket reduced.

well they are not allowed to patrol out of their area or county but they are allowed  to follow you for a violation that was committed in their county into another county

do you think the insurance will change a lot? im kinda tight on money right now, so idk about the laywer or not. i was just gonna pay the ticket with my tax refund.

if i were to contest it, is it a stupid idea to do it without using an attorney? and do i risk anything contesting it?

Lawyer = One time fee, ticket is reduced or dismissed so your record is better & next ticket penalty wont be as bad either. Cost will be about same or less than just paying ticket.

Just pay ticket = Insurnace goes up for 5 years or more if they find out, cost more in long run. The younger you are the more likely Ins Co checks your record every year. If you get another ticket your record is taken into account & penalty is likely to be more severe on next ticket. Cop is more likely to write a ticket rather than give warning if you have previous violations.

GET THE LAWYER!!!!!!!!

Legally, issuing a citation is a form of arrest in the court of Law.

Various state laws differ, and he may of been able to that.

The fact is, he clocked you at 91 in a 65 in his area, and you MUST APPEAR in court for that.

The courts only listen to lawyers, and the lawyer will cost you $300.

Rather or not he hit his lights and activated his dash cam past his county was legal or not is one argument.

But he probally found this little trick to get people to go to court and lose and pay more money.

Get a radar detector, the last cop tried that shi on me, became a visual discrepency in my rearview mirror.
