turbo coupe motor swap ?

Chris98Gt -> turbo coupe motor swap ? (2/3/2008 8:05:03 AM)

Ok, my step brother finnally ran his turbocoupe into the ground and blew a head gasget, fan doesnt work anymore blah blah, he killed it. He gave it to my dad and we are planning on rebuilding it and putting it in an 86 coupe. We've got the motor out and one question is do we need to get svo motor mounts or will n/a 4cylinder motor mounts work in the stock 86 craddle? Also can we just swap the harness from the tbird? After the motor gets rebuilt how much boost/timing can the stock block hold on 93? If we get it balanced do we need new valve train parts to spin the motor higher than the 6500 redline? Thanks guys.

I believe the regular motor mounts will work, but don't quote me on that.  You will definitely want to use the TC harness on the Stang, just check it over for bad spots just as a precaution.

Boost and timing go hand in hand.  On strictly 93 I ran 12* timing and 18 psi of boost.  When I got the front mount I bumped them up to 14* and 20 psi, and there is no audible knock.  Generally more timing = less boost, so it is a give and take game.

The cam is generally the big hold back in spinning the cars higher, and the TC's have the small IHI turbo which stops making power and becomes restrictive by around 5,000 rpm.

If I remember correctly, you'll have to use pieces of the turbo coupe harness since connections to and from the firewall will not match up. Read up on this site just to get an idea of needed parts before doing the swap...

the mounts from a 2.3 na stang work just fine. i did a 2.3t swap to my 84 and i swaped my engine harness from my old 88 stang, the only thing that you will find any difficulty with is finding and splicing your gauge wires and ignition wires witch isnt that bad. please note that i did not make any attempt to keep my a/c or powersteering. your redline is 6500 because thats when you engine computer cuts fuel, you will need a tuner or stand alone to overcome that issue.
