I recently hooked up an 110v2 to a nine 2 amp. Everything was working good. I set the gains with a multimeter so it was running 400watts bridged. I just installed an alpine headunit and it still worked. I just realized tonight it wasnt working so i took a look at everything. I test the amp with the multimeter and the voltage never seemed to change. The multimeter might be bad, but the sub would barely make any noise unless the gains were up really high, like unsafe high. And even then it was very quiet. Everything is hooked up right. No fuses are blown. What could the problem be? I just bought this stuff in october it cant be messed up. What do you suggest? Thank you for your help
I checked the ground and it looks good. I wired the sub up how to book told me to wire for 4 ohms. And 3 months ago when i installed the sub i did check with the multimeter and it said four. What happened is yesterday i had been at a car show with the stereo playing for probably 2 hours, then i got home and was messing around with the differant functions on the new hu i put in. I noticed the sub didnt sound like it was working at all. Went to the trunk and it wasnt. So i messed around with headunit trying to figure this out and how to fix it. And then the battery did die and i had to jump the car. I said f it and went inside. Not to mention the multimeter is ****ing worthless it was reading all kinds of random numbers and when checking the gain on the amp it would even read over 1 volt with the gain cranked, when it should have been 40. I tried adjusting the gain just by the sound to get the sub to play a little louder but once the sound became audible the gain was too high and the amp went in protect mode and shut everything down. The sub should have ben safe at 400 watts because its rated 500/800. Idk what the problem is and I dont want to take it somewhere to get it looked at.
If it helps, for the HU i hooked the remote wire for the nine.2 amp, both of the turn on wires for the mach 460(with the resistors), and one wire from a trigger switch to bypass the parking brake. Theyre all spliced in about a 1/2 inch apart at the end of the remote wire from the headunit.
again, a meter is not a good way to test the output of an amp, especially if you are expecting over 40....
What functions on the new deck were you messing with? When I loose power on my deck my alpine resets all of its settings so I have to go in and turn the sub output on.
Have you tested the subs to see if they are blown after jamming them?
My Alpine headunit has the Subwoofer on/off settings then 3 different sub setups and then you can adjust the bass and subwoofer levels. Also theres a Power IC mode that just turns the sub on and cuts power to the speakers.
I was messing with the subwoofer volume(didnt do anything) frequency, and some function that adjusted all the speakers/sub from -12db to +12db and i couldnt really get it to sound any differant thats when i went out back and checked it out and the sub was hardly moving at all.
yea ive already done that all the wiring is fine its worked perfect with a loc for about 4 months now that i installed the alpine im running into problems
yea ttocs. While i was playing around with the features i moved it from -12 all the way to +12. Could this have blown the sub/amp. The amp was close to its limit(400 watts @4ohm bridged) the sub is good for 500rms but i know that clipping could have wrecked that. Im testing my equipment on my friends amp tmrw. Say my amp is messed up. Elemental Designs has a 5 yr warranty but even if that doesnt work, do you think they would do repairs? Can it even be fixed and what would it cost? Thanks

Problem is, manufacturer warranties on equipment or items that have to actually be "installed", usually require professional installation and proof thereof. Thats one way they get you. Then again...if it was professionally installed, there might not be a problem?

eD doesn't require professional installation. If there is a problem with your amp or subwoofer, you have to fill out an RMA and send it in. All of this information is on their website. You pay for the shipping to them, once they get it they will diagnose the problem. If it's due to a defect, they re-emburse for the shipping you paid and obviously ship it back to you. If it's clear that its damaged due to abuse, whether from misuse or "improper" installation. And by improper, im not trying to rag on your install skills, theres could easily be a small step you skipped when changing something around. For instance, you want to always disconnect your battery when doing anything. I rarely do aside from anything significant changes to an amplifier. But say you did damage it because of something small like that, its not covered. 99% of the time they can tell if it's from a manufacturing defect or abuse, black or white.
If you die and have an autopsy done and your family suspects it's because your old. But you actually smoke 3 packs of cigarettes a day you just didn't tell anybody, and they open you up and your lungs are black as can be. Probably not because you were old...
If you send in a subwoofer that you can hear the coil scrape along the magnet, you can still smell the burnt coil etc. It's abuse not a defect.
If you have ever worked somewhere you will understand exactly what a warranty covers and how much people will beat the crap out of things and try to blame it on you because they were being care-less. Especially the audio industry. One of the very few, if not the only reason to ever buy anything at Best Buy. They get their equipment so cheap and mark it up beyond belief that if they refuse to replace a subwoofer for a customer, and they are pissed of at Best Buy and not shop there for a small amount of time, like a month. They will be losing money making you mad for that short of time, so they go ahead and do it to keep you coming back.
Depending on what it is, they can repair some things. If you need a re-cone (You smoked a coil or something) im almost positive they do those for $50-$75 depending on the driver, if it was because you blew it up.
Amps aren't really the same story, alot more to an amp than a woofer. Usually the the most cost effective is a new one if you popped it beating the hell out of it. Their amps have a great overload protection though, i'd be surprised if you blew the amp up.
