96_LAstang -> 84 SVO mod help (1/31/2008 8:42:32 PM)

 I may have a chance to get an 84 SVO, but i was wondering how expensive is it to mod an SVO? My goal would basically be like 12.0-12.5 1/4 mile, just curious on how much money would be involved to achieve that.

Depends on the route you wanna go.

Do you want to go the project bolt ons way (runs 11's, maybe 10's now) or what?

Do you want a DD or a drag car?

Depends on how aggressive you want to get.  Best bet would be to get a free flowing manifold and mate that to a Holset, downpipe and full exhaust.  A FMIC is a must.  You would want to add an LA3 computer and 35# injectors at the very least.  Any kind of porting to the intake/head side of the engine is going to increase the power.  For times like that you are going to need sticky tires, and eventually an 8.8 out back.

Like sleeper said, there are different routes you can go.  You can set out to make it as cheap as is possible, or you can spend the big $ to have a really nice setup.  There really isn't any way to set out a dollar amount that you are looking for.

I want a project car, but i want to be able to drive it it every now and then on the street. But  i would want to keep it a fairly cheap build.

TRBOPWR -> RE: 84 SVO mod help (2/1/2008 12:54:33 PM)

I talked to a guy at Norwalk with a Turbo GT (same motor) and he had a pretty simple setup.  LA3 and 35# injectors, FMIC, Holset set at 30 psi, ranger roller cam, log style manifold, some intake and head porting, and drag radials.  Running race gas and untuned the car ran 11.70's.  It could be detuned some and/or a meth setup added to get a car you could drive any time you wanted.

thanks, got a guess on how much it would cost to do about the same thing?

TRBOPWR -> RE: 84 SVO mod help (2/2/2008 6:22:24 AM)

That will mostly depend on how you get your parts, and what you choose to get.  FMIC kits range anywhere from $500-1K, or you can make one yourself with an ebay special for anywhere between 2-$300.  Holsets new can be between 5-$600, and used between 1-$300 depending on how lucky you are.  LA3's and 35 # injectors are fairly cheap.  Cam will depend on new or used, and the same with the manifold.  Porting is free if you have the know-how or desire to learn.  Radials will vary by your wheel size and brand.

Thanks, sounds like if i shop around and dont want it to be done NOW, i can make it a budget build and have a  pretty quick car.

Just curious on why you haven't decided to go that route or do you have bigger plans?

I'm doing that right now, just bought a LA3, Large VAM, #35 injectors, intercooler, all for $175[:D][:D][:D] If you look for deals you will find them[;)]

turbo2.3stang -> RE: 84 SVO mod help (2/2/2008 8:17:32 PM)

Sounds like the Holset turbo is the way to go. People beat on them all day long and love them. I've built on mine since I was 15. Since then, I have added ported intakes, roller cam, T3, Rod's stainless header, 3 inch exhaust, front mount intercooler, LA3 with 35# injectors, Kirbna on the rail, K&N on the VAM and a Bosch by-pass valve. It has an 8.8 with 3.55 gears and a Hurst Shifter. It needs a paint job but that will get done when I get out of college next year!

Got the FMIC installed, got a better cam, got the LA3 and 35# injectors, got some porting.  Holset and meth sitting on the floor in the garage waiting for some spare time from me.  Another thing needed is a wideband of some sort, still have to get that.

Hey, we try. [:D]  Keep in mind that this rough setup will work on any 2.3T motor, so it will work for other applications.  Could always keep your eyes out for another one, SVO's are cool little cars.
