Need some good advice...

Slothcat -> Need some good advice... (1/30/2008 2:43:35 AM)

I want these wheels.

http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10002_763970_-1_36656

But I don't understand all of this offset and bolt pattern and what not..

I want 18x9's, but that's all I really know...what should I get?

What is the year and model of your car?

zmetalmilitia -> RE: Need some good advice... (1/30/2008 8:33:02 AM)

The way I understand it is this:  backspacing is the clearance the wheel has from the face of the rotor, where the wheel and rotor touch, to the back lip or inside lip of the wheel.  Ex. if you have a 8" wide wheel and you have 4.5" backspacing, then from the point of where the wheel mounts to the rotor, there is 4.5" of wheel to the inside of the car.  The other 3.5" would come towards the outside of the car, towards the fender.  Offset is another confusing matter.  The offset is the distance from the center axis of the wheel, in relationship to the mounting point on the rotor.

Ex.  Offset is the distance from the center of the wheel to the inner side ( where the tire lip sits against the rim ).
You can have positive offset or negative. Front wheel drive cars tend to have positive offsets, with the wheel
flange toward the outside of the wheel.

In theory subtracting the wheel center line from the backspace gives you positive or negative offset amount.
If my rear wheels are 9.5" width. Backspacing is 5.25". Therefore the center line is 9.5"/2 = 4.75"
To find the offset we subtract (backspace) 5.25" - (center) 4.75" = 0.5" or 12mm approx.

Backspacing and offset seem to be in direct relationship with each other.  Good luck.

+1 with the offset. the bolt pattern is just like it says. the space between the studs. thats all that is. the offset is like zmetalmilitia said. is just the distance from the center of the wheel.

I think I'm more confused now than I was earlier haha...

I have a 2004 3.9l mustang

I'm gonna bump this back up because I really still don't feel like my question was answered...or maybe it was...but just not in simpleton terms for me haha.

What exactly should I get?

5x114mm is the bolt pattern

the offset is +22mm for your car.

does that help?

v8 all the way! -> RE: Need some good advice... (1/31/2008 1:14:04 PM)

actually my bad. the bolt pattern is 5x4.5. MY BAD!!!!!

Slothcat -> RE: Need some good advice... (1/31/2008 5:03:01 PM)

All I see with 18x9 is 24 mm and 34 mm

have you tried...
http://www.americanmuscle.com/99-04-mustang-wheels-rims.html. i would give this site a shot.

Slothcat -> RE: Need some good advice... (1/31/2008 6:39:24 PM)

I've looked at american muscle for my wheels, but i just really didn't like the looks of them...For some reason I really like these american racing torq thrust m's.

i know they look similar but to me these just look better

Slothcat -> RE: Need some good advice... (1/31/2008 6:41:56 PM)

Of course if I could find the same wheels at Tire Rack, and find out if they're cheaper I could always go with them

Alright, appreciate it bro :)

fastbreaktech -> RE: Need some good advice... (2/4/2008 7:00:33 PM)

This post has brought up something I have been wondering about for a while. I have a 69 coupe that I am restoring. I pulled the 8" rear end and was able to pickup a 9" from a 68 T-Bird which is 4" overall wider. I was planning on taking it to a rear end shop and having them cut it down and reweld it and buying custom axles, all for a cost of about $750. If I understand correctly I could purchase some Tork Thrust D's with 2" of back spacing and it would be the same. Is my reasoning correct?

Thanks in advance.
