WHY IS HEADER RED HOT?

when we start this 85 svo it seems to run fine until the header turns red hot and if you give it gas it will shoot flames out the header. then it doesnt want to run after it gets hot. you have to let it cool before it will start again. we just put a short block in it and not sure if it is timing, maybe we didint get the belt ligned up right, but not sure what to do.

Anyway the exhaust could be plugged?  Or it may be running really lean.

we dont even have the exhaust hooked up after the header. it is just running straight out the header. It is just while it is in the shop. we didnt intend to leave the exhaust off. It starts good but the header starts getting red hot just idling and if you give it gas it shoots flames out the header.

I made a mistake the exhaust is hooked up so I guess I cant tell you if is plugged or not.

i think a clogged cat is a common culprit of glowing headers.  mine's only glowed once after a long trip but it had nothing to do with the cat i don't think (i cut it off and could see light through it pretty easily.
