Can I run a wider tire?  Maybe a 245 up front and 295 out back?

Anyone running these BFGs out back?

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.jsp?make=BFGoodrich&model=g-Force+T%2FA+Drag+Radial&tirePageLocQty=

Thanks in Advance!

I'm running 245s on my 20s up front. 20x 8.5 I am satisfied with my bfgs. 295s wouldn't fit 8.5"s. I am running 275s out back on a 10" wide wheel. For the fronts, I'd go with either a 245 or 255.

You can't fit a 295 on a 8.5 wide rim.

But you can run 255/45/18 front and back.  It will be safe, look good, and not change your speedo.

Go with a 275 or 285 in the rear

when i was looking for tires at work the minimum rim width for the 275 or 285 was 8.5. Another ford dealer around here put 275's on the rear on a 17 inch rim on a few of there cars for sale and they looked extremely good

Does going from a 27 inch tire to a 26 inch tire have a similar impact as you would going from a 373 to a 390 rear?

If you go to tirerack.com and check out the selection of 275/40 or 285/40 for the 18 rim you will see the minimun wheel size is 9 to 9.5 and yes changing the diameter does change the gearing ratio.  Also it you are lowered 1.5" the smaller diameter leads to scraping.

I think these might work.  Slightly over the recommended width...but I really don't think 265s are too wide.

+1

I've seen others install 270/40 and 285/40, sure they got them on there.  But handling is sacrificed.   And may even be unsafe to a certain extent with the extra sidewall flexing.

I think these might work.  Slightly over the recommended width...but I really don't think 265s are too wide.

Too much tire for 8.5's in street use.  Period.

Being one whole inch below the minimum is much worse than being half an inch under, especially with the smaller diameter/lower profile (there is less sidewall height to spread the error out over).

There are a few 275/40's that are approved for 8.5" rims, but most tires in that size are not.  Just enough more sidewall than 265/40's to make the diffference, I'd guess.

If this was a trailered strictly-show car, or perhaps a very temporary condition of some sort, you could probably get away with it.

I would agree with Dex.  255 is seriously pushing it.  Hell, 245 is as well.  The suggest size for 8.5 inch rims is 235.  8.0 rims, 225, etc.

so, just to make sure: no spacers or anything, just the 255/45R18 straight on stock 18" rims = no rubbing in any situation?
I was considering tires like that to replace stock 235/50 for the summer...
