According to research I've been doing lately...

In vehicles producing under 400 RWHP the HP gains, or loss between Shortie headers & Long tube headers is non existant. From 5 sources I've researched from, Shorties provide more low end gain. Long tubes produce high end gains. In the end, cars under 400RWHP, the cost of Long tube headers & effort needed to install them is not needed.

According to the people who have done the testing and dyno runs, both long tubes & shortie headers produce the same hp gains, just in different places of the HP & TQ band.

Unfortunetly, I just cleaned my cache and some how lost my history, so I do not have the website URL's I got the information from. Take it for what it's worth ;)

And what about the difference between stock and shorties? 5-10hp?

From what I've seen on dyno graphs, 8-10hp if they are Jet Hot coated.

Now that I have an O/R X pipe, would shorties be good for me? I did read in many sources that shorties were very good for torque...... How much is it to install them?

Shorties are a 5-6 hour job for a shop. They are rather easy to install, just a tight space to work in makes for slow progress..

Majority of shops charge 60 and hour...I'd say anywhere from 400-600.

Here's the thing you do NOT realize when comparing the two.

You're comparing the peak power and torque with dis-regard to the curve.

I believe it was MM&FF, the one with the Red Saleen did a mid-length install to compare to shorties.  I'll be damned if they didn't have a gain of 20 some odd horses and ft.lbs. in the middle of the curve.....with the peaks being about the same.  Now imagine Long Tubes over Shorties........

well to be really correct none are the best..the one that is right would be one you tune just for your car as welding them together and have differnt primary tube lengths to help with temp in the compustion area and flow this can be done near the collector areas..how this helps..

I DID realize this, the problem was, not everyone here is going to understand that, and to save myself the time of explaining the differences you'll see in the hp/tq curve. That will be balanced out assuming you do more modding and stay under 400hp. But, good eye for catching that

I'm just saying that although the peak may not be higher, the power does come on sooner and stay up there longer.

This results in a much fatter curve with about the same peak numbers......even though one is much faster than the other.

Ok, so here's my combination questions:

I have an Off-Road X-pipe(with magnaflows) and they told me that long tubes wouldn't fit unless I customized.. cool'   Would shorties help me in any way? would they hurt my performance? What other mods do I need to help the set up that I currently have???

you could get the Bassani mid-lengths like I did.  They'll still have to do a little cutting, but those headers will fit your x-pipe.  A long tube setup would NOT fit, because you need a smaller x further down the pipe, not the current one under your car.  Shorties would fit, but u'd get more of a benefit from ml's. is there any difference in how they sound. so if i got long tubes i would have to have acustom x or h pipe made. how much would a shop charge to install long tubes

You'll get a more flat curve from long tubes than say shorties, but $400 you save for shorties can be used for another mod to gain the same as if you had long tubes.

Is it true that an off road Xpipe could produce the same or even more power than long tubes?? I was reading some numbers and dynos on this.. Ever heard of this?

What's the difference in price between the mid lenghts and shorties?? What about performance?

Which is harder to install? Thanks again.

Aaron, it is true for OPEN headers, not length specific.

Jug, speed/power band wise, long tubes, then mid lengths, then shorties, then manifolds.
