Why does everyone around here mock the gto?  I have seen m6 ls1 gto's hitting low 13's 13.3 or so in the 1/4 and ls2 goats hitting 13.00.  Seems like respectable times to me.  IMHO, many inexperienced drivers buy these (manuals) and can't launch them worth a ****.  This is the main cause of the horrible times many gto;s have seen.  Any thoughts?

Because those are respectable times for a 300 hp car, not 350 and 400 hp cars.

The IRS has a lot to do with the ****ty launching, too.

ya, kind of a pointless post.

ive seen s197 gts in the 15s, even some gt500s in the 15s

basically the styling is very 90s, and its overweight.  those are my reasons.

Sure...here's my thought. They're ugly as sin. They look like a half eaten apple. Like a bigger, heavier, more powerful rear drive Cavalier. But that's just my opinion. Don't get me wrong I like high end F-bodies, vettes, old musclecars, rear drive rice,Stangs of course, but to me the designers of the GTO dropped their pants and stepped on their dicks with that one, fast or not. Just my two cents...

Oh, I forgot to mention in my post that I don't hate GTOs, I was just giving reasons other people hate them.

I actually kind of like 'em, and the interiors are SOOOO much nicer than the ones in Mustangs

I love GTOs. Take a LS2 M6 GTO with some LCAs and a good set of DRs, and you all in the mid 12s. They tried to mix a good ride with the 400hp and they ended up with car that sucks on the launch. Easy fix, none the less.

Its a 400hp rear drive cavalier.  I think its pretty unfair to call it a goat.  And like qatar said, those are respectable times for a 300hp car not 400.  I really like the ass sag look they have, like they have trunks full of cement (or something of a similar weight).

I personally LOVE GTO's. I love their clean, understated looks, and their interior is one of the nicest you will ever see in ANY GM car. They're good all around cars. Pretty good mileage. Decent handling. And tons of aftermarket support. I really don't see what there is to dislike about them, apart from possibly styling, which is subjective anyway.....

Well said bro. Subjective is right. Some guys say my notch is the ugliest bodystyle ever while others praise them. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and beauty, second only mostly to performance is what puts different asses in different seats. For me the goat is just a little too...rotund. But again that's just me .

I totally agree. I remember driving one when I was looking at new cars, and I know if I'd had 22,000.00 I would have bought it right there and then. That LS2 is amazing, and I have always wanted a six speed.

I dont understand why people hate all these cars. Personally, I love all cars, including imports, chevy's and mopars. why there has to be anything other than friendly competition is beyond me

I'm in total agreement. If you like a car you like it, not hate it cause it's in direct comparison with what you have. I personally just don't like it's look much but I can't deny it's performance and well roundedness. Just that if I had that same 22K, I'd go the SS SLP route. Apples, oranges, they're all good...

I know, people just get too caught up in brand loyalty. I was actually looking to buy a ls1 or ls2, I really wanted one, but I came across my GT with 26k invested with only 10k on the clock, for a mere 14k, I just couldn't pass it up

Overweight? With a few mods my friend's 06 M6 GTO weighed 36XX with us out of it. DOT scales.

Well, the 05+ GT's run a BEST of 13.3 or so  and the GTO's have run in the 12's. THey average 3-5mph more trap speed and .3-.5 faster. Or in my terms, I am dead = with a 6.0 GTO and 05+ GT's are cake even in the wrong gear after I reach 5K rpm.

The GTO is a bad car, and if you have ever been in one that extra weight you all whine about went to GREAT! use. Now the GT500 at a crown vic-esque 2 tonnes is superflous in it's allotment of weight. But we won't go there.

The GTO is a great car.

To each his own.

So in retrospect, there no reason to ask why things are the way they are. No one is going to change anyone opinion about the GTO so lets leave it at that.

I love the GTO and the Mustang.  They are VERY different applications of a similar quest.  The GTO does it all better, stock, and the Mustang does 90% of it, while looking better, which to me, and many others means more.

I had a hot looking car when I got the goat, and now I have the goat and the stang.  No doubt, the mustang is the looker, but the GTO has the power.

80's mustangs and escorts look similar, but you dont' see me hating.

+1  They are also the most bland performance car i've ever seen.

The biggest reasoning behind all of the hate is peoples opinions of what looks good. To some the retro Mustang is sweet to others it was best left dead. As for performance the GTO does everything the Mustnag does but better.

What to many of you fail to realize is that the 2004-2006 GTO has been alive as the Holden Monaro since 1998 in Europe/Austrailia. Over there they have everything from a 3.8 Litre to a stock Harrop S/C VXR model. GM owns Holden and just wanted to cash in on a current design. They did the same thing with the Cadillac Catera, Chevy Cobalt/Saturn ION chassis, new sedans and the new Pontiac G8. What they did leave in Europe however was the cars original sport handling suspension the American GTO was a sport/touring car here. With this decision softer springs from the sedans were installed and soft bushings were added. The European versions also all used a 235 tire and GM thought that was to narrow and added the 245, which with a slightly off alingment can cause issues due to tight clearances.

I had a 2006 LS2 GTO for exactly one year before trading up to my C6. It was a fun car and changed alot of peoples opinions pertaining to the weight vs power talk. The only thing I really disliked about the car was the suspension. It handled better than my Mach1 suspensioned 2003 GT but not as good as my Camaro SS's.

As for power it easily made the 3682lbs car move from 0-60 in 4.7 seconds and a best 1/4 of 13.03 @ 110mph. Take a look at what was available in 2006 for $30,000 and that pretty good performance!

Anyone who calls these cars overweight really need to go weigh there GT one day. For what you get I will gladly take the 200lb weight addition.

As for weak points:
- The driveshaft is a two piece design that utilizes rubber u-joints
- It's rear end left a little to be desired you know quiet operation and stuff like that
- Like all IRS cars the axles become a weak point with added power
- The front suspension suffers from crap sturt and radius rod bushings
- Getting the car truely aligned is a 4 hour event

Most of the alignment and suspension issues were caused by the car beiging straped down for the 30+ day trip from Austrailia.

Truthfully I cannot see why so many Mustang kids hate the GTO. If you go sit in a S197 then a GTO then drive both how can you dislike the GTO? I will admit though the 2004 was a bit bland vs the 2005-2006. The pricing might have been a factor also $27,000 vs $30,000 but then again alot of premium GT's went for $30,000 and many red tagged 2006 GTO's were less than $26,000.

In the end my GTO ended up just like my 2003 GT, it was clear that it was only going to be great at one thing and only good at others.
