I'm new to this forum and this is my first post (kinda long). I sure could use some insight.

Car is a 90 LX VERT 5.0

For the past week or so, I've been having a hard start problem (cranks for a while before starting).

Yesterday, the car wouldn't start at all (not even cranking), but the starter relay does click every time...starter just doesn't do anything.

The book says check all the connections, if problem still exists then replace starter relay.

My connections all checked OK, so I replaced the relay. This is where it gets wierd. With the new relay in, when I try to start the car, the starter engages, the motor turns over, but never stops cranking...even after I take key out. It just keeps cranking until I pull the negative cable off the battery. As soon as I touch the negative cable back to the post, it sparks and the motor starts cranking again until I disconnect it.

When I put the old relay back in, I get old behavior...just clicks, nothing else.

You folks have any ideas? I'm baffled.

Sorry for the long post.

Scott

it sounds like the way that you have hooked the new relay is makeing the starter stick. make sure that your running you wires the right way

Thanks for the reply Spike.

Actually I figured it out this morning. The relay I bought from AutoZone was bad out of the box. I bought one from Pep Boys this morning...problem solved.

Thanks again for responding.
