Default RE: RPM and Gears question

With a manual trans (stick) 4:10's might be a little low. 3:73 might be better, but my bud has 4:10's on his manual trans V6 and it kicks ass, but his first gear is almost non existent and when he races me he starts in second because my first gear is much taller then his.

To answer your first question, when you free rev your engine, there is a limiter. That's why it sounds like sh!t when you try to rev it up too high. My custom chip removed that, but it is good to keep when your car has a manual trans, because if you miss a gear while racing, it won't let you over rev so you won't blow your motor.

Bottom line. 4:10's make your car very quick off the line and through the gears. Most street races are short, so low gears are a MUST in my opinion.

i would go with 3.73 gears for the most part because they still give you quite a bit of accelereation but if you want you can go on the highway and won't have to have your car revving to high...now for me i might get 3.73 or 3.55 because i drive the highway everyday... i have to sacrafice the high gearing because i do drive highway...but if you don't then..buy the 4.10s if you don't

well that clears up everything so yes the limter is good because my friend has a 92 honda accord automatic and he racing some one and he was swiching gears like it was stick so i was like wtf i dont think that good for the car so last week his motor blew, i think one of the pistons broke and made a bigass hole in the head it look real nasty.

so he should put in the 4.10 cuz he wants to race so does rpm changes or wat how does it make faster. and what is a possie or something like sorry but im just trying to learn as much as i can

gear ratio=how many times the driveshaft will turn to make the wheels turn once. if the gear is lower (numerically higher), it's a lot easier to get going because you'll be in the powerband sooner...or something like that. cause think of it like this...you'll be at a higher rpm at a lower speed, so pretty much you'll be making more power sooner.

posi=both wheels are being on the launch. an open differential/rearend will only turn one wheel because the way it's set up, it will turn the wheel with less resistance, but a posi will let the rearend be "locked" on launch and then act like an open differential on turns so you don't lose streetability.

and don't listen to the bull****...if you're gonna do gears, don't base it off both accelleration and gas mileage. they're hotrods, not commuter cars. pick one or the other.
