Default Newbie to hot rodding looking for advice.

Hello all. First off I'd like to introduce myself. As you can tell from the screenname I'm not new at playing games. I spent 18 years as aprofessional poker player and now own my own sports bars.

I was recently introduced into the racing/mustang world recently and want to go big. My goal is to have a street friendly 7 second mustang.

I'm old school and like things simple and reliable. The money isn't gonna be a great concern, however reliability will be. I'm thinking carbed and either nitrous or turbo for a reliable powerplant.

So with a 30k dollar limit to a longblock what do you guys suggest?

Umm, 30k isnt going to get you a long lasting 7 seconds. Sorry bud.

All i can say is good luck. I would start with a solid car, and build my way up. If you want that much power, do it right.

Welcome and uh, Not sure what you mean by "street friendly 7 second" car. But good luck w/ that one. You should do some research. A 7 second car is no where even going to be close to streetable.

Personally I would not turbo a carbed car. when you build boost based on engine load its way too variable vs engine speed (with supercharger)which is a more predictable. the jetting in a carb means you are locked into a tune, if you are going to the drag strip only (which it appears yo are not) a carb could work in a competition setting, but for the street its not a good idea. If you want forced induction you want to look into a fuel injected motor (i was going to put if you want FI you need an FI motor.... but that is confusing [8D]).

other than that, dont outshoot yourself on your goals. a 7 second car is hard enough to put together at a track. that is pro stock territory. just did a quick search, and (even tho this article is old and someone might yell at me for it) your car would be NHRA super stock and a few years back their record was 7.98 at a drag strip. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/m...06/ai_n9237275 just did a quick glance, so if i missed something my bad.

but anyway, not saying a 7 second street car isnt possible, but very difficult especially with the money you are talking and throwing in the reliability factor. you wont keep things "simple and reliable" at this level.

however, with the cash you are talking you could have a car that runs low 10s and does it as if it didnt break a sweat. bullit proof everything, brand new parts. and you would wax 99% of anything you would run into on the street.

30k wont get me a longblock that'll last? I've been told that was more than enough.

Well what do you suggest? Any shops specialize in this type of car?

it will give u a motor that will last, but not in the 7s. but u gotta remember, that most of the competition motors dont even last. they need to be rebuild constantly. just the nature of the beast.

Rebuilding isn't a concern. My brother operates a machine shop.
Here is his suggestions.
-dart 460
-twin 76's or twin foggers
-powerglide
-painless wiring harness to keep the car legal
-and full suspension from one of the stock suspension companies

It's not all about motor, it's the complete drive train and suspension as well. I think you need a lil more perspective about what it will take and what you are actually trying to accomplish on a 30K budget. 2 entirely different things.
