Default Aftermarket speedometer, using stock speedometer wiring?

I am wanting to install an Autometer speedometer and was wondering if I can disconnect the wiring from the back of the stock gauge cluster and connect it to the Autometer gauge. Or do I have to buy the hall effect Ford plugin sender for the speedometer?
