Considering CarAndDriver got a regular GT to 60 in 5.1; I find this odd.  I would have figured an even 5 secs at most!

I've noticed that a lot of magazines are getting different 0-60 #'s for the Mustang.  There seems to be a lot of variance in the times, I know there always is, but especially so for the Mustang GT.  I've seen 5.1 - 5.8!!

Maybe it's because it's been tested so many times!

Anyway, the Shelby GT gets crushed by the STI in the article.  I know, I know, two very different cars.  They know and discuss that, too.  But very close HP and Price. 

As for their launch technique:

"Launching the Shelby GT is a matter of fine throttle control and patience. Although it never felt perfect, the 2.1-second 0-30 time equals the latest LS3 Corvette, which has an additional 111 hp and less weight. We found the quickest launch technique was to feed in the clutch at no more than 3,000 rpm while increasing the throttle application such that minimal wheelspin is produced. It's easy to go too throttle-heavy and spin the tires or go too throttle light and bog the engine."

A variance of .5 seconds on a 0-60 at this end of the range (5sec) is easy to get. Most all of the time it's due to nothing more than technique, certainly with a Manual transmission.

Whether mine does 0-60 in 5.0 or 5.8 is of no significance to me in the slightest.  For those worried about bragging rights at the local bar though, simply quote the best time you ever read, or failing that, do what Chevy drivers do, exaggerate !!

Funny reply......I used a GTECH meter to check my 0-60 times. Being new to the Device it took a couple of tries to perfect it. My first couple of readings were 5.2..after a little tweaking of the launch etc. I got a best of 4.9, not bad for street tires and a load of extra stuff in the trunk.

Shelby GT is basically a normal GT, so whatever the GT clocks the shelby GT will also... I doubt if theres more than 0.1 sec in difference.

It makes about 20rwhp more and is lowered 1.5" and gets a little mor epower to the ground. I owned a Mustang GT for almost two years before buying this, and I'll tell you, just the suspension upgrade is a HUGE difference!  [:)]

As far as 0 - 60 times, I think it's maybe a couple of tenths faster. That can be made up for the Mustang GT with a tune and stuff, but this cars a blast to drive and get's the looks!

The night I bought Lilly, I went to Taco Bell, I was hungry and it was getting late. I sat there in line and watched the gawking people all around. I got up to about 3 cars from the window, and the building next to us was Long John Silvers, and their drive thru was going the opposite direction, so they were straight across from us. I looked over and notice an suv just sitting at the window for a while, of course the two people inside just staring. I thought they were looking at Lilly while they were waiting, then the car behind them honked their horn and they finally moved. They had gotten their food and were just sitting there gazing at the beauty. I loved it!

My guess is the stiffer suspension offsets the HP gains when talking 0-60 mph.
Cornering and acceleration from a standstill require very different suspension setups.

Wallace Racing has a calculator that can figure your 0-60 from your 1/8 mi ET and trap speed (more accurate than 1/4).
Not sure exactly how accurate it is but it might get you in the ball park.

Putting in my various 1/8 mi ET and Trap Speeds for a regular GT gives:
8.743 @ 81.92 mph 1/8 mi = 4.69 0-60
9.040 @ 77.50 mph 1/8 mi = 5.63 0-60

PS the best magazine published 0-60 I remember for a regular GT is 4.9
but that was back in 2005 and may have been a preproduction car.

As long as you're traction limited, the extra weight up front of the supercharger and 6-speed tranny will work to hold the acceleration down slightly.  Only after it stays hooked can you use any of the extra power.  It's not at all certain that the difference in rear tires between the GT and the GT500 is enough to cover that.

I suspect that the differences in axle ratio, parasitic losses, transmission gearing, and rotating mass generally favor the GT, with the GT500 being aimed more at being the acceleration king from 60 on up.

I would figure an STi would beat a shelby because it is set up with 0-60 with awd and how the gearing is set up.  At sppeds greater than 60 shelby has a big advantage.

Ford is using the 4.9 seconds from the 2005 Road & Track test in its 2008 brochure!
The difference in 0-60 times isn't unexpected and can be done with the same driver because of weather, temp and elevation differences. Magazines, hopefully, can't just make up numbers, but have to report the actual times they achieved. If a magazine got 5.2 seconds in its testing they can't say 4.9 just to match R&T's results.
