I think there is this general assumption that people that drive auto's do not have driving skill/ability/experience ... whatever.
I have an auto. I have had my second thoughts, but I return to the fact that I love driving this car, it turns heads, it is classic. I want comfort and ease right now while I pay off the car. I can run a 1/4 consistently and improve the performance as the timeline evolves. Plus, will someone please explain how the auto can be heavier, loose an extra 8% on the converter, but let run an equal (or faster) 1/4 mile stock? Serious, is there something I am missing?
Skeptics who I work with stopped giving me sleet after a cruise in the car - their "idea" of an auto, or lack of a stick, changed after a run up the road.
Oh, and to really stir things up. I am getting a 03-04 Corvette with a stick for more "sports" driving. I think that a certain amount, NOT ALL, of manual drivers who slam autos suffer from "small man syndrome".
So, I will see you on the 1/4 mile with my stang, and the track with my vette. Either way, I am the happy one and that is what counts.
Before I get flamed, I am in my mid-30's, and drove truck for 12 years. I grew up on heavy machinery, and recreationally, I was on dirt bikes at 8. I have been there and done that with all types of equipment and toys. I can probably handle and drive more than you.

Auto, and I am stationed in Southern California where traffic is not joke.
Traffic or not. I drive in NYC and my car is a DD. I drive stick. I hated myself the first two weeks for it though. After I got used to it i actualy like it more even in traffic. At least I am not bored. BTW, before someone gets a my traffic is bigger than yours syndrome. Let me tell you It has taken me as long 1.5hrs to cover a little over 12miles. In stop and go I idle in second. It takes me about 45min a day to cover 15miles on average. Not to mention I average around 18mpg in this stinking traffic.. Lets see you auto guys do that.
Also let me reasure the guys with autos, it does not make you less of a man because you drive auto, just means you have different taste and priorities.
all of the guys at the FORD plant where i work, laughed at me when i told them i ordered an '07 AUTOMATIC California Special. they are laughing no more, some of them won't talk to me anymore, until they make up over a 1/2 second, i guess. stock -vs- stock. when i miss driving a stick i jump in my 40,000 mile 1994 LT1 6 speed ~ pristine at that! don't ask what pulls stronger from 60 to 160 mph. don't ask which one is in the garage for keeps. but the GT/CS does have 10k miles in 5 months. nice, really nice car. BRENSPEED has woke it up!!!! them boys in indiana got it right. really right. both cars are awesome for what they are. when i really want to shift i have 2003 Kawasaki KX 500, when cranking on it through 2nd, 3rd, 4th ----------- it really separates the boys from the men from the insane. there's a whole nutther world out there.... diversify... my quad is the KFX700 with a CVT transmission, it feels about as fast as a shopping cart compared to the 2 stroke 500cc. i know this is Mustang Forums. and i luv my vista blue hole shot machine.

I find it almost funny how people distinguish persons ability to drive a car by it's mechanical makeup. Keep in mind that there are a few people in this world who do not know how to drive a manual trans. Is a manual more enjoyable to drive or more fun to drive? I have had both manual and auto stangs. I can say one thing. There is nothing worse than ripping up first gear, nailing second, and then missing third gear only to grind the hell out of what some of us call the "Funner-Better" car! I would have loved to get the manual when i got my car but my wife doesnt know how to drive a manual, and i was not about to teach her in the stang! Auto was my choice and have been very happy with it!
