Default Brake Dilemma

So here's the thing. I'm looking at a pair of 14" alcon brakes on clearance. They're a great price and it's brake kit that includes front and rear slotted rotors, calipers, brake lines, etc.

The alcon 14" front and backkit is only about $500 more than the 13" saleen brembo kit(which is only a front brake kit).

The only catch is that the kit says "Roush" on it. It might even be the same alcon kit saleen used....just a different name on it.

Sooooo.....which one would you go with and why.....

Let the battle commence. [sm=badbadbad.gif]

Unless the "ROUSH" is stamped into the caliper, get those and just paint over it.

Here's what it looks like. If you painted over it you'd still be able to see the roush imprint (unless you powder coated it...which is another option).

So is a 14" alcon for $500 worth it rather than a 13" brembo? Would you even notice the difference in stopping power?

That depends on how many pistons each one has. Brembo should have 4. I dunno about the Alcon.

If memory serves me correctly, Alcon makes a better brake than Brembo. Better, larger diameter rotor.....tough to pass up. Admittedly, the Roush name on a Saleen may be a bit wierd.

Two issues come into play:First of all, the 14" rotor is not going to help you stop much better unless you drive really hard as it will just not heat up as fast. My 13" Brembos stop wonderfully, but if I push too hard, they will attempt to lock up and ABS will kick into play [:@](I HATE ABS brakes) You will also have clearance issues with your spare tire (if you carry one) and may have problem clearance on your 18" wheels in general.

Here is a pic, but did not think to do it straight on so you could see clearance better [&o]

i dont think i could have a part that says roush on my car. not saying that they make a bad product. i just wouldnt want a competing manufacturer's name printed somewhere on my car.

The Alcons are superior to the Brembo's. I've had them both. The "roush" kit for $500 is a much better deal. On top of that I don't believe anyone has the Saleen/Brembo kit in stock at all right now.

Don't even sweat that it says Roush on there. And don't waste any extra dough having them sprayed professionaly. Just sand down the red raised color and re-spray black with high temp paint from a can and cll it a day.

Otherwise, if you can wait, just get the Saleen Brembo's. If I didn't tell you the Alcons were superior you would never know right? The Brembo's are a fantastic upgrade and with some Porterfield or Hawk pads they will stop your car in a HUGE way. You will notice a huge difference.

My Alcons I had on my S351 made me almost think I could make my car do a nose stand they stopped so well.

They are different in how they stop but if you have not had both you will be totally satisfied with teh 13" Brembo's.

Oh,

An if it matters.... the Brembo's are a nice, pretty glossy black like on Jazz's car there. The Alcons are all business and come in that black/grey machine look color. They also turn even more grey after a few thousand miles or so from cooking. Just a thought.

I would make sure that whatever kit you choose fits the wheelson your car.
